The kickboard is the most familiar piece of swim gear in the world. Every swim lesson, swim team and lap lane has a stack of them, and for good reason: holding a board lets you focus on your legs, build a stronger kick and practice breathing without worrying about your arms. For kids learning to swim, it is often the first tool that makes them feel confident in the water.

This guide picks the best swim kickboards for adults, kids learning to swim and toddlers, plus a durable board for swim teams. We also show you how to use a kickboard properly, simple kick drills and core exercises, and the difference between a kickboard and a pull buoy.

How to use a kickboard properly

  1. Hold it correctly. Hold the sides or the top edge with your arms straight out in front. Do not lean your whole chest on the board.
  2. Keep your body flat. Your hips and legs should stay near the surface. If your legs sink, your head is probably too high.
  3. Kick from the hips. Use your whole leg, with relaxed knees and loose, pointed ankles. Small, fast kicks work better than big, slow ones.
  4. Breathe naturally. Either keep your face in the water and lift to breathe, or keep your chin on the surface for easy kicking.
  5. Keep the board flat. Pushing the front of the board up into the air makes your hips drop.

Kickboard drills

Flutter kick

The standard drill: arms on the board, steady flutter kick from the hips. Start with 4 x 25 yards with rest, and build up.

Face-in kick with breathing

Keep your face in the water and turn to the side to breathe, as you would in freestyle. This trains body position and breathing at the same time.

Breaststroke kick

Hold the board and practice the breaststroke whip kick: heels toward your bottom, feet turned out, then a strong push back and together.

Vertical kick

In deep water, hold the board against your chest and kick to stay upright, keeping your head above water. Great for leg strength and water polo players.

Speed bursts

Kick 10 to 15 yards as fast as you can, then easy for the rest of the length. Repeat. This builds a powerful kick for racing.

Kickboard exercises for core and abs

  • Board press: in chest-deep water, hold the board flat in front of you and press it straight down under the water, then let it rise slowly. Keep your core tight.
  • Kick with one arm: hold the board with one hand and keep the other arm at your side. Your core works hard to keep you straight.
  • Back kick with board on chest: lie on your back hugging the board and flutter kick. Engage your abs to keep your hips up.
  • Standing twists: hold the board with both hands under the water and twist from side to side against the resistance.

Water exercise is gentle on the joints, which makes kickboard workouts a good choice for many people. Check with a doctor if you have injuries or health conditions.

Kickboard vs pull buoy

Body positionIsolates the kickLifts the legs so you can focus on arms
Best forKick strength, beginners, breathing practiceStroke technique, upper body strength

Most swim workouts use both: a kick set with the board and a pull set with the buoy. Many swimmers buy them together.

Best kickboard for kids learning to swim

For children in lessons, choose a board sized for them, such as the TYR Junior. A board that is too big makes it hard to keep arms straight and body flat. Let children practice kicking while holding the board with a parent or teacher close by, and keep sessions short and fun.

Are kickboards safe for toddlers?

Kickboards are useful for teaching young children to kick and get comfortable in the water, but they are not flotation devices and will not keep a child safe on their own. Always stay within arm’s reach of young children in the water. For more swim gear for kids, see our guide to the best kids swim goggles.

How to choose a kickboard

  • Size: adult boards for teens and adults, junior boards for kids, small boards for toddlers.
  • Buoyancy: thicker boards float more, which helps beginners and larger swimmers.
  • Grip: finger scallops, grooves and textured foam make the board easier to hold.
  • Durability: dense foam lasts longer and resists bite marks and chlorine damage.
  • Shape: classic rectangular boards are best for kicking; shaped boards can add comfort.

A simple 20-minute kick workout

  1. Warm-up: 4 x 25 easy freestyle with 20 seconds rest.
  2. Kick set: 6 x 25 flutter kick with a board, 15 seconds rest.
  3. Speed: 4 x 25 kick, fast for the first half, easy for the second half.
  4. Technique: 4 x 25 face-in kick with side breathing.
  5. Cool-down: 100 easy swimming, any stroke.

Beginners can halve the distances and take more rest. As you get fitter, add more repetitions or shorten the rest.

How to care for a kickboard

  • Rinse with fresh water after every swim, especially after chlorine or salt water.
  • Let it dry in the shade; strong sun breaks down foam over time.
  • Store it flat and away from sharp objects.

Got questions?

Frequently asked questions

What is the best swim kickboard?

The Speedo Adult Swim Training Kickboard is our top pick for most swimmers. Choose the TYR Junior for kids and a small junior board for toddlers.

How do you use a kickboard correctly?

Hold the sides or top with straight arms, keep your body flat near the surface, kick from the hips with relaxed ankles and keep the board flat on the water.

Do kickboards help you learn to swim?

Yes. They let beginners focus on kicking and breathing without worrying about their arms or sinking.

What is the difference between a kickboard and a pull buoy?

A kickboard is held in your hands to train your legs. A pull buoy goes between your thighs to train your arms.

Can you use a kickboard for a core workout?

Yes. Pressing the board under the water, one-arm kicking and back kicking with the board on your chest all work the core.

Are kickboards safe for toddlers?

They are useful for learning, but they are not safety devices. Always supervise young children within arm’s reach.

What size kickboard should a child use?

A junior board around 14 by 10 inches suits most children. Toddlers need even smaller boards, and teens can use adult boards.

Why do my legs sink when I use a kickboard?

Usually your head is too high or you are pushing the front of the board up. Lower your chin, keep the board flat and kick from the hips.
