A new bike is one of the most exciting gifts a child can get, but the wrong size makes riding hard and even unsafe. Kids bikes are sized by wheel size, not frame size, and the right wheel depends on your child’s height and inside leg, not just their age.

We compared the best-selling kids bikes on Amazon on size range, build, brakes, ease of assembly and what thousands of parents say. Below: a kids bike size chart, one clear pick for each age, and tips for teaching your child to ride.

Height and inside leg matter more than age. If your child is between sizes, choose the smaller size for a new rider and the larger size for a confident rider.

How to measure your child for a bike

  1. Have your child stand against a wall in their shoes.
  2. Place a book between their legs, spine up, like a bike seat.
  3. Measure from the top of the book to the floor. That is the inside leg (inseam).
  4. Compare with the chart. On the bike, they should be able to touch the ground with the balls of both feet when sitting on the seat.

Balance bike or training wheels?

Many parents now start with a balance bike at around age 2. Kids push along with their feet and learn to balance and steer. When they move to a pedal bike, many can ride without training wheels within days. Training wheels still work well, especially for kids who start riding later, but some children find the switch to two wheels harder. Either way is fine; choose what suits your child.

Coaster brakes vs hand brakes

Most 12 and 16-inch bikes have coaster brakes, which work when the rider pedals backward. They are simple for small kids. From about 20-inch bikes, many have hand brakes, which give more control and prepare kids for bigger bikes. Bikes like the WEIZE have both, which is a nice way to learn.

Bike safety essentials

  • A helmet that fits: snug, level on the head, two fingers above the eyebrows.
  • Bright clothing and lights: especially at dusk.
  • Closed-toe shoes: no sandals or flip-flops.
  • A safe place to learn: an empty parking lot, park path or quiet cul-de-sac.
  • Check the bike: tire pressure, brakes and bolts before each ride.

Assembly tips

Most kids bikes arrive 85 to 95% assembled. You usually attach the handlebars, pedals, seat and training wheels, then pump the tires. Check that the handlebars are straight and tight, the pedals are on the correct sides (they are marked L and R), and the brakes stop the wheel firmly. If you are unsure, a local bike shop can do a quick safety check.

When to buy a bigger bike

  • Your child’s knees come close to the handlebars when pedaling.
  • They can put both feet flat on the ground while seated, even with the seat raised to its limit.
  • They have grown 3 inches or more since you bought the bike.

How to teach a child to ride a bike

  1. Lower the seat so both feet sit flat on the ground.
  2. Start with gliding: let them push along with their feet and lift them for short glides, like a balance bike.
  3. Add pedals: once they can glide for a few seconds, have them start with one pedal at the “2 o’clock” position and push off.
  4. Look ahead: remind them to look where they want to go, not at their feet.
  5. Practise braking early, so stopping feels easy.
  6. Keep sessions short (15 to 20 minutes) and end on a success.

Best bike by age

  • Ages 2 to 3: a balance bike like the KRIDDO.
  • Ages 3 to 5: a 12 or 14-inch pedal bike with training wheels, like the Schwinn Elm or RoyalBaby.
  • Ages 5 to 7: a 16-inch bike; character bikes from Huffy are popular.
  • Ages 7 to 10: a 20-inch bike with hand brakes, like the WEIZE.
  • Ages 10 and up: a 24-inch bike, often with gears for hills.

Giving a bike for Christmas

Bikes are big boxes, so plan ahead. Order early in December, assemble the bike a few days before (late-night assembly on Christmas Eve is a classic stressful moment), and check the brakes and tire pressure. Hide it in a garage or a neighbor’s house, then put a bow on the handlebars. Add a helmet in the same box so your child can ride safely right away.

Useful accessories

  • A helmet that fits, plus knee and elbow pads for beginners.
  • A bell, so other path users hear them coming.
  • Front and rear lights for dusk rides.
  • A water bottle cage or a small handlebar bag.
  • A lock for older kids who ride to school or friends’ houses.

Why bike weight matters

A heavy bike is hard for a small child to pedal, steer and pick up after a fall. As a rough guide, try to keep the bike under about 40% of your child’s body weight. Steel bikes are affordable and tough but heavier; lighter aluminum bikes cost more. For most families, the bikes in this guide offer a good balance of price and weight for learning.

Helmet fit check

A helmet only protects if it fits. Measure around your child’s head just above the eyebrows, then choose the size from the helmet’s chart. When it is on, it should sit level, about two fingers above the eyebrows. The side straps should form a V just under the ears, and only one finger should fit under the chin strap. Have your child shake their head: the helmet should not slide around. Replace any helmet after a crash, even if it looks fine.

Our verdict

For most families, the RoyalBaby Freestyle is the safest bet: it is sturdy, easy to assemble and loved by more than 15,000 buyers. Start toddlers on the KRIDDO balance bike, and move older kids to a 20-inch bike with hand brakes like the WEIZE. Above all, match the bike to your child’s height, add a helmet, and enjoy those first wobbly rides together.
