Age-by-age guide

Ages 4–6 (T-ball)

Most kids wear YXS or YS. Pick a pull-on pant with an elastic waist so they can dress without help, like the Alleson Youth Pull-On Pant. Belts and flies just slow everyone down at this age.

Ages 7–8 (coach pitch)

Usually YS. Elastic-bottom pants are a smart choice: they sit at the ankle or can be pulled up to show socks, and they don’t drag. The Alleson Elastic Bottom Pant is a 4.3★ pick with 800+ ratings.

Ages 9–10 (Little League minors)

Usually YM. Kids start to care how pants look. Many switch to belted pants with a zip fly. If your child grows fast, the Alleson Crush Premier has an adjustable inseam that works full length or knicker-style.

Ages 11–12 (Little League majors)

Usually YL. Travel and all-star teams often want piped pants. The Alleson Pant with Braid comes in many team color combos.

Ages 13–14 (juniors)

YXL or adult small. The inseam is the deciding factor: tall teens may need adult sizes for length even if the youth waist fits.

How to measure a child for baseball pants

  1. Waist: measure around the belly button line, over thin clothes.
  2. Inseam: measure from the crotch to the ankle bone. For knickers, stop just below the knee.
  3. Check a pair they own: lay their best-fitting sweatpants flat, measure across the waist and double it.

Should you size up for growth?

Yes, by one size at most, and only for pull-on, elastic-bottom or adjustable pants. These hide extra length. Don’t size up open-bottom pants: the hem drags, gets wet and wears through. If you need two seasons from one pant, the Crush Premier’s adjustable inseam is the safest bet.

Youth baseball pants colors: what to buy first

If your league hasn’t picked a color yet, grey and white are the safest first purchases. Grey hides dirt and works for most away uniforms. White is the classic home color but needs more washing. Black and navy are common for travel teams. If you only buy one pair, buy grey.

Belts, socks and cups

Belted pants need a youth belt, usually 1.25 to 1.5 inches wide. Kids who wear knickers or high-cuffed pants also need tall baseball socks. Boys in Little League are usually asked to wear a protective cup with compression shorts underneath, so check that the pants still fit with them on. See our guides to baseball belts, baseball socks and youth baseball pants and socks.

Signs the pants no longer fit

  • The hem sits above the ankle on full-length pants.
  • The seat pulls tight when your child squats into a fielding stance.
  • The knee pad area sits above the kneecap.
  • The waistband leaves red marks after a game.

Any one of these means it’s time to size up.

Brand size differences for youth pants

Most youth baseball pant brands use similar waist ranges, but the cut can differ. Alleson and Champro are relaxed and roomy. Some newer brands are slimmer through the thigh. If your child has a slim build and likes a fitted look, stay with their measured size. If they are stocky or wear a cup and compression shorts, consider one size up for a relaxed brand, or two sizes for a slim brand.

Team-ordering tips for coaches

Collect a waist measurement for each player instead of asking for a usual size, because store clothing sizes vary a lot. Order one spare in YS and YM for late sign-ups. If the budget is tight, pull-on pants are the cheapest way to dress a young team, and families can buy a second pair in the same color for practice.

Youth vs adult sizing: the switch-over

The jump from YXL to adult small is where most sizing mistakes happen. The waist ranges overlap (YXL is about 28 to 30 inches, and adult small is about 28 to 30 inches too), but the adult pant has a longer inseam and a fuller seat. Use this rule of thumb:

If your teen…Choose
Fits the YXL waist and the leg reaches the shoeYXL
Fits the YXL waist but the leg is shortAdult S
Wears adult jeans size 28–30Adult S
Is over 5′6″ tallAdult sizes, check the inseam

Knickers or full-length for kids?

Many Little League teams now wear knickers or full-length pants pulled up to the knee to show off team socks. Knickers look neat and stay out of the dirt, but they need tall socks to cover the shins. Full-length pants protect the legs better when sliding and work in cold spring weather. For kids under 8, full-length pull-on pants are simplest. From about 9 up, let the team uniform decide.

How many pairs does a child need?

For most rec leagues, one game pair plus one practice pair is enough. Travel players who play several games a weekend should have two game pairs, so one can be washed while the other is worn. Practice pants can be an older pair from last season, as long as they still fit at the waist.

Common youth pant sizing mistakes

  • Ordering by age alone. Two 9-year-olds can be two sizes apart. Measure the waist.
  • Buying open-bottom pants two sizes big. The hem drags, gets soaked and frays within weeks.
  • Forgetting the cup and compression shorts. They add bulk at the waist and seat. Try pants on with them.
  • Mixing brands on one team. Colors like “grey” vary between brands. Buy the brand the team uses.
  • Waiting until opening day. Popular sizes in grey and white sell out in early spring.

Got questions?

Frequently asked questions

What size baseball pants for an 8-year-old?

Most 8-year-olds wear YS or YM. A waist of 22 to 24 inches is YS, and 24 to 26 inches is YM.

What size baseball pants for a 10-year-old?

Usually YM or YL. Measure the waist to decide.

What size baseball pants for a 12-year-old?

Usually YL or YXL. Tall 12-year-olds may need a longer inseam.

Do youth baseball pants run big?

Most have room in the leg, so they feel a little big. That is normal and helps with sliding and growth.

When should a kid switch to adult pants?

When the youth XL inseam is too short, usually around age 13 or 14, or a height of about 5′4″.

How we built this chart

We used Alleson’s general youth size guide, as published by Alleson uniform retailers, and checked fit notes from Amazon review topics. We did not test the pants ourselves. Age and height columns are rough guides. Always confirm with the chart on the listing.
