The best putting mats for home practice

We compared the best-selling indoor putting mats and greens on Amazon on surface, length, ball return, alignment aids and what tens of thousands of golfers say. Below is one clear pick for each kind of golfer, plus simple drills.

The best putting mats, reviewed

PUTT-A-BOUT Par Three Putting Green
You need this if: you want a reliable, affordable green for daily putting practice.
- Size3 x 9 ft
- ShapeKidney
- Made inUSA
- Ratings4.6★, 24,000+
Why we recommend it: It is by far the most-reviewed putting green on Amazon. Golfers mention quality, value, enjoyment, fun and practice value most. The surface stays smooth, and the kidney shape lets you putt from different angles instead of the same straight line every time.
Keep in mind: It has no ball return. The surface runs a little faster or slower than real greens depending on your floor.

SKLZ Putting Green
You need this if: you want to hit many putts in a row without collecting balls.
- Size9 ft x 16.25 in
- ReturnAutomatic, adjustable
- GuidesAlignment at 3, 5 and 7 ft
- Ratings4.5★, 6,900+
Why we recommend it: The automatic ball return is the most praised feature in reviews, and golfers also mention value, practice value and putting performance. The alignment guides help you square the face and control your stroke length.
Keep in mind: It is narrow, so it trains straight putts rather than breaking putts.

YOUCZON Indoor Putting Green
You need this if: you want a smoother, more realistic surface for home or office.
- SurfaceCrystal velvet
- BaseAnti-wrinkle natural rubber
- FrameSolid wood
- Ratings4.6★, 940+
Why we recommend it: The crystal velvet surface and anti-wrinkle rubber base give a smooth, consistent roll, and the solid wood frame feels sturdier than plastic. Golfers praise its quality, performance, fun and indoor practice value. It also makes a good gift.
Keep in mind: It costs more than the PUTT-A-BOUT. Check the length on the listing for your space.

Dachenus Putting Mat
You need this if: you want to train speed and accuracy, not just knock in putts.
- HolesTwo sizes, small 2.5 in
- Marks2, 4, 6 and 9.5 ft
- ReturnMagnetic return
- Ratings4.7★, 620+
Why we recommend it: It has the highest rating here. The smaller hole trains precision, so the real cup looks bigger on the course, and the distance marks help you practise speed control. Golfers praise its quality, enjoyment and easy setup.
Keep in mind: It costs around $75. The smaller hole is hard at first, which is the point.
Alternative: the GimYaa putting mat also has an automatic ball return and two hole sizes, with a foldable velvet surface. Buy it instead of the SKLZ if you prefer a wider mat.

How to choose a putting mat
Length
Most misses on the course are from 3 to 8 feet. A mat of about 9 feet covers that range. Longer mats help with lag putting but need more room.
Surface and speed
Green speed is measured on the Stimpmeter. Most public courses run about 8 to 10. Good mats roll at a similar speed. Velvet and premium turf surfaces give a smoother, truer roll than cheap carpet.
Ball return
Automatic returns save time and let you hit many more putts. Mats without a return are simpler and often wider.
Flatness
Mats should lie flat without wrinkles. Unroll a new mat and let it settle for a day, and put it on a hard, level floor rather than thick carpet.
Alignment aids
Lines, distance marks and smaller holes turn casual putting into real practice.
▶ The Best Putting Drill Ever (You Can Do at Home)Swing Quest Golf shows a simple drill you can do on any putting mat. The video loads from YouTube only when you press play.
Putting drills to do at home
- Gate drill: place two tees just wider than the putter head and stroke through without touching them.
- Ladder drill: putt to 3, 5 and 7 feet, trying to stop each ball just past the hole.
- Clock drill: put balls in a circle around the hole at 3 feet and hole all of them in a row.
- Eyes-closed putts: feel the stroke, then guess whether it went in before looking.
- One-handed putts: putt with only the lead hand, then only the trail hand, to build control.
Do putting mats really help?
Yes, if you use them regularly. Ten minutes a day builds a repeatable stroke and confidence on short putts, which are the easiest strokes to save. Mats will not teach you to read real greens, so combine home practice with time on the practice green before rounds.
Putting mat with break or slope
Most putting mats are flat, which is perfect for grooving a straight stroke. To practise breaking putts at home, slide a thin book or towel under one edge of a mat to create a gentle slope. The PUTT-A-BOUT’s kidney shape also lets you putt across the mat at an angle. Specialist mats with adjustable breaks exist, but they cost much more.
How to build a 10-minute home putting routine
- 2 minutes: gate drill for a square face.
- 3 minutes: 20 putts from 3 feet. Count how many you hole.
- 3 minutes: ladder drill at 5 and 7 feet for speed.
- 2 minutes: pressure finish. Hole 10 in a row from 3 feet before you stop.
Track your 3-foot makes each week. Seeing the number climb is great motivation.
Best putting mat for the office
For an office, a narrow mat with a ball return, like the SKLZ, fits along a wall and keeps balls from rolling under desks. The YOUCZON green looks smart enough to leave out, and both are quiet on carpet tiles.
How to care for a putting mat
- Roll it loosely with the surface facing out to avoid creases.
- Vacuum or lint-roll velvet surfaces to keep the roll smooth.
- Keep it out of direct sun, which can fade and warp the surface.
Where to put a putting mat
- A hallway, office or basement with a hard, flat floor.
- Away from furniture legs and door thresholds that create bumps.
- Somewhere you pass every day, so you actually use it.
Outdoor putting greens
Some putting mats can be used on a patio, but most indoor mats are not made for sun and rain. If you want a permanent backyard putting green, look for outdoor artificial turf made for putting, which is a bigger project and investment.
Practise the full swing too with a golf hitting net. A putting green is also one of our favorite gifts for golfers.
