Catcher’s and first base mitts

Fastpitch catchers use mitts measured around the outside, usually 31 to 32 in for under 10s and 32.5 to 34 in for older players. First base mitts are about 11.5 to 12 in for young players and 12.5 to 13 in for teens.

Softball vs baseball gloves

Softball gloves are larger with a deeper pocket for the bigger ball. Fastpitch gloves are also built with a narrower hand opening and smaller finger stalls, which fit most girls and women better than baseball gloves. For baseball sizes, see our baseball glove size chart.

How a softball glove should fit

  • Snug, with the index finger often outside the back of the glove.
  • The player can open and close it with one hand.
  • Not so big that it slips when the hand is shaken.

Breaking in a softball glove

Play catch as much as possible, use a small amount of glove conditioner, and store the glove with a ball in the pocket tied with a band. Avoid ovens and microwaves, which damage leather.
