How high should a basketball hoop be for kids?

A good guide is 5 to 6 ft for toddlers, 6 to 7.5 ft for ages 5 to 6, 8 ft for ages 7 to 8, 9 ft for ages 9 to 11 and the regulation 10 ft from about age 12. A lower rim helps kids learn good shooting form.

Youth programs such as Jr. NBA guidelines recommend lower rims and smaller balls for young players. Leagues still vary, so check what your child's team uses.

Why lower rims help kids

When the rim is too high, kids heave the ball from their hips with two hands, which builds bad habits. A lower rim lets them shoot with proper form, make more shots and stay motivated. As strength and technique improve, raise the rim gradually.

Choosing a hoop for your driveway

  • Toddlers: a freestanding toddler hoop or an over-the-door mini hoop.
  • Ages 5 to 11: an adjustable portable hoop that lowers to 7.5 or 8 ft and raises to 10 ft.
  • Teens and adults: a 48 to 54 in backboard on a sturdy portable or in-ground pole.

Hoop safety tips

Fill portable bases with sand or water as directed so the hoop cannot tip. Do not let kids hang on the rim unless the hoop is rated for dunking. Keep the play area clear of cars and slopes, and check bolts every season.

How much space do you need?

For a driveway or backyard hoop, allow at least 15 feet from the pole to give room for free throws and layups, and a few feet behind the backboard so balls do not roll into the road. A half-court is about 47 by 50 feet, but most families play happily in a 20 by 20 foot space. Position the hoop so players are not shooting into the sun in the afternoon.
