Other pitching rules to know

  • Finishing a batter: in Little League, if a pitcher reaches a limit during an at-bat, they may finish that batter.
  • Catching: in Little League, a player who pitches 41 or more pitches in a day cannot catch for the rest of that day.
  • One league at a time: pitch counts are per league. Kids who play rec and travel ball can be overused, so track all pitches together.
  • Months off: Pitch Smart advises at least 4 months a year with no overhead throwing, and 2 to 3 of those months in a row.
  • No curveballs too early: focus on fastballs and changeups until good mechanics are in place.

What about softball?

Fastpitch softball does not have national pitch count rules like baseball. The windmill motion puts less stress on the elbow, but overuse injuries still happen. Many coaches track pitches anyway and give rest after long outings or tournament weekends. Watch for shoulder or back pain and tired mechanics.

Signs a young pitcher needs rest

  • Arm, elbow or shoulder pain, even mild.
  • Lower velocity or sudden loss of control.
  • Dropping the elbow or changing their motion.
  • Needing more time to warm up than usual.

Pain is never normal. Stop pitching and talk to a doctor if your child has arm pain.
