The best indoor basketballs
An indoor basketball has a soft composite or leather cover that grips well on a clean gym floor. It feels better in your hands than a rubber ball, but it wears out quickly on concrete, so it is a ball for gyms, not driveways.
We compared the best-selling indoor basketballs on Amazon on cover, feel, grip, sizes and what tens of thousands of buyers say. Below is one clear ball for each need, plus a size chart by age.

The best indoor basketballs, reviewed

Wilson Evolution Indoor Basketball
You need this if: you play indoors in a gym or league and want the best feel and grip.
- CoverMicrofiber composite
- FeelCushion Core, soft
- ApprovalNFHS, indoor only
- SizesSize 7, 6 and 5
Why we recommend it: It is the most popular indoor ball on Amazon, with more than 16,000 ratings at 4.7 stars. Buyers praise its quality, texture, grip and indoor performance. The Cushion Core makes it softer to the touch and easier to control around the rim, and the pebbled composite channels give a consistent feel over the whole ball.
Keep in mind: It is for indoor use only. Playing on concrete wears the cover quickly. For outdoor courts, choose an outdoor ball.

Wilson NBA Authentic Indoor/Outdoor
You need this if: you want one premium ball for the gym and the driveway.
- CoverMoisture-management PU
- GripDual Depth channels
- BounceEver Bounce construction
- SizesSize 7, 6 and 3
Why we recommend it: It has 4.7 stars from more than 800 buyers, who praise its quality, value, grip and versatility. The deeper channels and moisture-wicking cover keep it grippy even when hands are sweaty, and it is built to handle outdoor courts better than a pure indoor ball.
Keep in mind: An indoor and outdoor ball is a compromise. It will not feel quite as soft as the Evolution indoors, and it will wear faster than a rubber ball outdoors.

Spalding React TF-250
You need this if: you want a composite indoor feel without paying Evolution prices.
- CoverComposite leather
- BladderButyl, good air retention
- UseIndoor and outdoor
- ShipsInflated
Why we recommend it: It gives you a composite cover and a soft feel for much less money, and it has 4.5 stars from more than 2,000 buyers. Buyers praise its quality, grip and texture. It arrives inflated, so it is ready to play out of the box.
Keep in mind: Value and durability are the most mixed topics in reviews. It is a great practice or second ball, but serious players usually prefer the Evolution.

Molten FIBA Approved Basketball (Size 6)
You need this if: you need a size 6 (28.5 inch) ball for women’s, girls’ or youth play.
- Size6, 28.5 in
- ApprovalFIBA approved
- Design12-panel, two-tone
- CoverSynthetic, indoor and outdoor
Why we recommend it: Molten makes official balls for international play, and this FIBA-approved size 6 ball has 4.6 stars from more than 3,000 buyers. Buyers praise its quality, grip and feel. The 12-panel, two-tone design also helps players see the spin on their shot.
Keep in mind: It ships deflated, so you need a pump. If you need a size 7 ball, choose the Evolution or NBA Authentic instead.

Silent Foam Basketball (Size 7)
You need this if: you want to practice dribbling at home without disturbing neighbors or family.
- MaterialSoft PU foam
- Size7, 29.5 in
- AirAirless, no pump needed
- UseIndoor only
Why we recommend it: Buyers mention the low noise level most, and many use it for dribbling practice in apartments, bedrooms and hallways. The soft foam will not mark walls or break things, and it never needs pumping.
Keep in mind: It does not bounce like a real basketball, and bounce is the most mixed topic in reviews. Use it for ball handling at home, not for shooting at a hoop or real games.

Indoor vs outdoor basketballs: what is the difference?
Indoor balls use soft composite or genuine leather covers. They feel great and grip well on clean wood floors, but rough concrete scuffs and tears them quickly. Outdoor balls use tough rubber or hard-wearing composite covers that survive asphalt and concrete but feel harder in your hands. Indoor/outdoor balls sit in the middle. If you play mostly in a gym, buy an indoor ball. If you play mostly outside, see our guide to the best outdoor basketballs.

What to look for in an indoor basketball
Cover material
Composite (microfiber or PU) covers are the most common. They feel soft and grippy right away and need no break-in. Genuine leather balls, used in pro leagues, feel great once broken in but take weeks of play to get there and are expensive.
Grip and channels
Deeper channels and a pebbled surface help you control the ball, especially with sweaty hands. Moisture-wicking covers like the NBA Authentic’s help too.
Feel
Softer balls, like the Evolution with its Cushion Core, are easier to catch and shoot. Harder balls feel bouncier but less forgiving.
Approval
If you play in high school leagues, an NFHS-approved ball like the Evolution matches what you play with. FIBA-approved balls like the Molten are used in international play.
How to care for an indoor basketball
- Keep it indoors. Use it on gym floors only, and keep a separate outdoor ball.
- Check the pressure. Most balls play best at about 7 to 9 PSI. Check the number printed near the valve.
- Wipe it clean. Use a damp cloth to remove dust, which makes the cover slippery.
- Store it at room temperature. Heat and cold change the pressure and can damage the cover.
- Use a needle properly. Wet the needle before inserting it, so you do not damage the valve.
Is the Wilson Evolution worth it?
For indoor players, yes. It is more expensive than budget balls, but the soft feel and grip are why so many players and gyms use it, and it lasts a long time when kept indoors. If you also play outside, buy a cheap outdoor ball as well, so the Evolution stays in the gym. See our full Wilson Evolution review for sizes, PSI and how it compares with rivals.
