The Wilson Evolution: still the indoor ball to beat

This Wilson Evolution basketball review starts with a simple fact: the Evolution is the indoor ball you’ll find in most high school gyms in America, and it’s one of the most-bought basketballs on Amazon. Players love its soft “Evo” feel and grip.

Below: which size to buy, the right PSI, whether you can use it outside, and how it compares with the EVO NXT, Molten and NBA balls.

Wilson Evolution indoor basketball

The short answer

  • Buy it if: you play indoors in a gym, school or rec league and want the same ball many high schools use.
  • Skip it if: you mostly play outside on asphalt or concrete. Get an indoor/outdoor ball instead.
  • Watch out for: air loss. It’s the most common complaint, and a moistened needle and correct PSI prevent most of it.
  • Size: size 7 for men and boys about 15+, size 6 for women and most 12 to 14-year-olds, size 5 for ages 9 to 11.

What 16,900+ buyers say: the box score

Amazon groups review mentions by topic. Here’s the Evolution’s “box score” from those topics, as of October 2026. Green is praise, amber is mixed, and red is a complaint.

AIRSome balls lose air over time144

The takeaway: buyers overwhelmingly praise the feel and grip. The complaints are mostly about air retention and durability, and both are often linked to outdoor use or inflating with a dry needle.

Wilson Evolution PSI: how to inflate it right

The recommended pressure is printed next to the valve: 7.5 to 8.5 PSI. Inside that range, aim for the middle (about 8 PSI) for a true bounce without the ball feeling rock-hard.

  1. Use a pump with a pressure gauge and a basketball needle.
  2. Wet the needle with water or a drop of glycerin before inserting it. A dry needle can damage the valve and cause slow leaks.
  3. Insert the needle straight in, not at an angle.
  4. Pump to about 8 PSI, then check it with the gauge.
  5. Test the bounce: dropped from about 6 feet, a properly inflated ball bounces back to roughly waist to chest height.

Why does my Wilson Evolution lose air?

Air loss is the most common complaint, and it usually comes from one of these:

  • A dry needle: it scrapes the valve. Always moisten the needle.
  • Over-inflating: pumping well past 8.5 PSI strains the bladder and valve.
  • Cold: balls lose pressure in cold garages and cars, so the ball may just need a top-up.
  • Outdoor use: rough surfaces wear the cover and can damage the bladder.

The fix: top it up with a moistened needle to 8 PSI and check it again the next day. If it’s fully flat again within a day, the valve may be faulty, so contact the seller while it’s under the return window.

Can you use the Wilson Evolution outside?

Indoors: yes

Wood and sport-court floors are what the Evolution is built for. The soft composite cover grips best and lasts longest indoors.

Outdoors: no

Asphalt and concrete grind the soft cover down fast, and the ball loses its grip within weeks. For outdoor courts, get an indoor/outdoor ball like the Wilson NBA Authentic Indoor/Outdoor (4.7★, about $50).

A common setup is one Evolution for the gym and one cheaper indoor/outdoor ball for the driveway. See our best outdoor basketballs guide for outdoor picks.

Wilson Evolution vs EVO NXT

The EVO NXT is Wilson’s newer indoor ball and the NCAA’s official game ball. Wilson says its super-soft core and balanced construction add spin and a softer touch around the rim. It costs about $25 more. Choose the EVO NXT if you play college-style ball or want the newest feel. Choose the Evolution if you want the proven high school favorite, more colorways and the lower price.

Wilson Evolution vs Molten BG4500 and BG5000

Molten makes FIBA’s official balls, so they’re common in international play. The 12-panel BG4500 is a composite ball that many players find grippy, and it costs less than the Evolution. The BG5000 uses top-grain leather, which needs breaking in and has a lower Amazon rating. If you play in a league that uses Molten, practice with Molten. Otherwise, most US players prefer the Evolution’s softer feel.

Wilson Evolution vs the NBA game ball

Wilson’s official NBA game ball is a full-grain leather ball that costs much more and needs a long break-in before it plays well. The Evolution’s composite cover feels great from day one, which is why it’s the better buy for almost every player who isn’t on an NBA court. For an NBA-branded ball that also works outside, the NBA Authentic Indoor/Outdoor is the budget choice.

“Wilson Evolution Game Ball”: is it different?

No. On Amazon, the classic brown Evolution appears as both “Brown” and “Brown – Game Ball”. Both are the Evolution indoor game basketball with the same Cushion Core and composite cover. The colorways are the same ball in team colors. When a listing says “Official”, it means the official men’s size, 29.5″ (size 7).

Composite balls like the Evolution are the sweet spot for most indoor players: they feel great immediately and don’t need weeks of break-in like genuine leather.

Buying Evolutions for a team

  • Match the game ball. If your league or school plays with the Evolution, practicing with it makes game day feel familiar.
  • Get the right size for the team: size 7 for boys’ high school, size 6 for girls’ teams and most middle school players.
  • Plan on several balls, roughly one for every two or three players, so shooting drills keep moving.
  • Add a ball bag and a pump with a gauge, and check pressure before practice.
  • Label the balls with a marker so they come back after away games.

Is the Wilson Evolution worth $100?

For indoor players, yes. You get the ball many high school gyms use, a soft feel that buyers rave about, and consistent grip game after game. That’s why it has one of the highest review counts of any basketball on Amazon. It’s not worth it if you’ll mostly play outside, because the cover wears quickly. In that case, a $30 to $50 indoor/outdoor ball is the smarter buy. Prices change often, and the Evolution regularly appears in sales, so check the current price.

Breaking in and caring for your Evolution

  • Break-in: the composite cover feels good from day one, and it gets even grippier after a few sessions of dribbling and shooting.
  • Clean it: wipe off dust with a slightly damp cloth, then let it air-dry. No soap soaking and no dishwasher.
  • Store it: keep it indoors at room temperature, away from heaters and cold garages.
  • Don’t sit on it or use it as a footstool. It can warp the shape.
  • Check the pressure before each session, using a moistened needle.

Wilson Evolution colors

Every Evolution is a brown ball. The “colorways” change the color of the Wilson logo and Evolution lettering: navy, royal, scarlet, green or yellow, plus USA and red/white/blue editions with patriotic graphics. The colorway doesn’t change how it plays, so choose your team colors or your favorite. The picker above shows which colorways we found in each size.

Is the Wilson Evolution a good gift?

It’s one of the most popular basketball gifts for teens and players in school leagues. Get the size right: size 7 for boys about 15+ and men, size 6 for girls, women and most 12 to 14-year-olds, and size 5 for younger kids. Add a pump with a gauge and needles. Frequently asked questions

What PSI should a Wilson Evolution be?

7.5 to 8.5 PSI, as printed next to the valve. About 8 PSI is a good target.

Can you use the Wilson Evolution outside?

What size Wilson Evolution should I buy?

Size 7 (29.5″) for boys about 15+ and men, size 6 (28.5″) for women, girls and most 12 to 14-year-olds, and size 5 (27.5″) for ages 9 to 11.

What is the Wilson Evolution 28.5?

It’s the size 6 ball, 28.5 inches around. It’s the official size for high school girls, college women and the WNBA.

Wilson Evolution vs EVO NXT: which is better?

The EVO NXT is newer, the NCAA game ball, and has an even softer core, but it costs more. The Evolution is the proven high school favorite at a lower price.

Why does my Wilson Evolution lose air?

Usually from a dry needle damaging the valve, over-inflating, cold storage or outdoor use. Moisten the needle and inflate to about 8 PSI.

Is the Wilson Evolution used in high school games?

Yes. It’s NFHS approved, and Wilson calls it the number one indoor game ball in America.

Is the Wilson Evolution leather?

It’s microfiber composite leather, not genuine leather, which is why it feels good without a long break-in.

How long does a Wilson Evolution last?

Used indoors and stored well, many owners get several seasons from it. Outdoor use shortens its life a lot.

Is the Wilson Evolution good for kids?

Yes, in the right size. Size 5 suits about 9 to 11, and size 6 suits most 12 to 14-year-olds.
