The best pickleball overgrips

An overgrip is a thin wrap that goes over your paddle’s handle. For a few dollars it makes a worn, slippery handle feel new, soaks up sweat and lets you hold the paddle with a looser, more relaxed grip.

We compared the best-reviewed overgrips on Amazon on tackiness, sweat absorption, thickness, durability and what thousands of buyers say. Below is one clear pick for each need, plus how to wrap one in two minutes.

Tacky vs dry overgrips

Overgrips come in two main feels. Tacky overgrips, like the Wilson Pro, Mega Tac and Gamma Supreme, feel slightly sticky, so the paddle stays put with a light hold. They work best in normal or cool weather. Dry or absorbent overgrips feel more like a soft towel and soak up sweat instead of staying sticky. They work best for very sweaty hands and hot, humid days. Many players keep one of each: a tacky grip for most days and an absorbent grip for summer. If you are not sure, start with the tacky Wilson Pro, then try the CRBN DryTec if your hands still slip.

Overgrip thickness and color

Thin overgrips keep the feel of your paddle and change the handle size the least. Thicker overgrips add cushioning and make the handle a little bigger. Color is personal, but light colors show dirt quickly, which is actually useful because it reminds you to change the grip. Darker colors look cleaner for longer.

Why use an overgrip on a pickleball paddle?

  • Better grip: factory handles get smooth and slippery quickly. A fresh overgrip makes the paddle feel secure again.
  • Less sweat: overgrips absorb sweat so the paddle does not twist on hard hits.
  • A looser hold: when the handle feels secure, you can relax your hand, which helps touch, spin and arm comfort.
  • Bigger handle: each overgrip adds a little thickness, which helps if your handle is too small.
  • Cheap and quick: a new overgrip costs a few dollars and takes two minutes to put on.

How to put on a pickleball overgrip

  1. Peel the backing off the overgrip and remove the small plastic film from the tapered end.
  2. Start at the butt cap at the bottom of the handle, with the tapered end angled along the handle.
  3. Wrap upward in a spiral, pulling gently so the grip stretches, and overlap each turn by about a quarter of the width.
  4. Keep the overlap even all the way up so there are no bumps.
  5. Stop just below the paddle face, cut off any extra at an angle, and secure the end with the finishing tape.

Overgrip vs replacement grip

An overgrip is thin and goes over your existing grip. It is cheap and meant to be changed often. A replacement grip is thicker and cushioned and replaces the factory grip completely. You put on a replacement grip when the original grip is worn out, torn or too thin, and then add overgrips on top.

Optional upgrade: if you have tennis elbow or want more cushioning, a shaped replacement grip like the Hesacore pickleball grip can help. Its hexagonal pattern is designed to let you hold the paddle securely with less squeezing. It replaces the factory grip, so remove the original first. Most players do not need it.

Pickleball overgrip vs tennis overgrip

They are the same product. All the overgrips here are sold for tennis and pickleball. Pickleball handles are shorter than tennis handles, so one overgrip easily covers a paddle handle and you will usually cut off a little extra.

How often should you change your overgrip?

Change it when it feels smooth, shiny, hard or sticky in the wrong way, or when it starts to tear. Regular players often change overgrips every 2 to 4 weeks. Players with sweaty hands, or who play every day in summer, may change them weekly. A fresh overgrip is the cheapest upgrade you can make to your paddle.

How many overgrips should you use?

One overgrip adds about a millimeter to the handle. If your grip feels too small, add one or two overgrips until it feels right. If it is too big, use a thin overgrip like the Wilson Pro, or none at all. Most adults find a total grip circumference around 4.25 inches comfortable. Not sure about your paddle?
