The best pickleball paddle sets for beginners, reviewed

niupipo Fiberglass Paddle Set of 2
You need this if: two people want a complete, inexpensive set that plays well enough to keep for the first season.
- Included2 paddles, 4 balls, bag
- PaddlesFiberglass, honeycomb core
- WeightAbout 7.8 oz
- Face15.43 x 7.8 in, wide
Why we recommend it: With more than 11,000 ratings at 4.7 stars, it is the most-reviewed beginner set we found. Buyers mention quality, weight, grip and that it suits beginners. The wide face is forgiving, the paddles are USA Pickleball approved, and you get two indoor and two outdoor balls so you can play anywhere.
Keep in mind: Fiberglass paddles are springy, so new players sometimes hit long at first. If you start playing several times a week, you will probably upgrade to a carbon paddle within a few months.
Alternative: if the niupipo set is out of stock, the MTEN set is very similar, with 4.7 stars from more than 9,000 buyers. Buy one or the other, not both.

JoncAye Fiberglass Paddle Set of 4
You need this if: four people will play together and you want matching quality for everyone.
- Included4 paddles, 4 balls, bag
- PaddlesFiberglass, PP honeycomb
- WeightAbout 8 oz
- Grip4.25 in, cushioned
Why we recommend it: Four decent paddles cost less here than buying two sets of two. Buyers praise value, that it suits beginners, the light weight and durability, and the paddles come in different colors so nobody mixes them up. The polypropylene core is also quieter than older Nomex cores, which helps if you play near neighbors.
Keep in mind: The set of 4 costs around $60. If only two people play, the niupipo set of 2 is better value.

Selkirk SLK Neo 2.0 Paddle Set
You need this if: you want a set from a well-known paddle brand that will last beyond the first season.
- Included2 paddles, balls, sling bag
- SurfaceGraphite with spin texture
- Core13mm honeycomb
- WeightAbout 7.5 oz each
Why we recommend it: Selkirk is one of the biggest names in pickleball, and this set has close to 5,000 ratings at 4.6 stars. Buyers mention that it is good for beginners, good value, light and comes with a useful bag. The light paddles are especially good for older players or anyone with arm or shoulder discomfort.
Keep in mind: It costs about three times as much as the niupipo set. You are paying for the brand and longer-lasting build, not a big difference in how it plays for a beginner.

AOPOUL Wood Paddle Set of 4
You need this if: you want an inexpensive, tough set for kids, the driveway, the beach or camping.
- Included4 paddles, 4 balls, 4 towels, bag
- Paddles9-ply poplar wood
- ShapeWide body
- UseCasual and kids
Why we recommend it: Wood paddles are almost impossible to break, which makes them ideal for kids and casual games. This set is one of the best-reviewed wood sets, with 4.6 stars from more than 2,000 buyers, and it adds cooling towels and a bag.
Keep in mind: Wood paddles are heavier than fiberglass and have no spin surface. Adults who plan to play regularly should choose the niupipo or JoncAye set instead.

What is a good pickleball paddle for beginners?
A good beginner paddle is light, forgiving and inexpensive. You do not need carbon fiber or a spin surface for your first few weeks. What matters is that the paddle is easy to swing, has a wide sweet spot and feels comfortable in your hand.
- Weight: 7.5 to 8 ounces is ideal. Light paddles are quicker at the net and easier on the arm.
- Shape: a wide or standard face, about 15.5 to 16 inches long and 7.8 to 8 inches wide, gives the biggest sweet spot.
- Material: fiberglass or graphite. Wood is fine for kids and casual play but heavier.
- Approval: look for USA Pickleball approval so you can use the paddle in leagues later.
What size pickleball paddle do I need?
For most adults, a standard or wide paddle with a grip circumference of about 4.25 inches fits well. To check, hold the paddle in your normal grip. You should be able to fit the index finger of your other hand between your fingertips and the base of your palm. If the gap is much bigger, the grip is too large. If there is no room, it is too small. Between sizes, choose the smaller grip and add an overgrip to build it up.
Kids under about 10 often do better with a lighter paddle or a youth paddle. The wood set above works for kids, but young children may find wood paddles a little heavy for long games.
How do you pick the right pickleball paddle?
Think about how often you will play and who you are buying for:
- Trying the sport: a cheap fiberglass set like the niupipo.
- Playing once or twice a week: a fiberglass or graphite set from a good brand, like the Selkirk.
- Playing three or more times a week: upgrade to a single carbon paddle. See the best pickleball paddles under $100 and the best paddles for spin and control.

Fiberglass, graphite, wood or carbon for beginners?
Fiberglass
Springy, light and inexpensive. It adds easy power, which helps new players get the ball over the net. Most beginner sets, including the niupipo and JoncAye, use fiberglass.
Graphite
Light and stiff, with a controlled feel. Graphite sets like the Selkirk SLK Neo are a little more expensive and suit players who want more touch.
Wood
Heavy, tough and cheap. Good for kids, schools and casual games, but not for regular adult play.
Carbon fiber
The best for spin and control, but more than a beginner needs. It makes sense once you play regularly and want to improve your soft game.
What else do beginners need?
- Court shoes: running shoes are made for forward motion, not side-to-side moves, so they raise the risk of rolled ankles. Use tennis or pickleball shoes.
- Outdoor balls: if you play outside, the Franklin X-40 is the standard outdoor ball. Sets usually include only a few balls.
- A net: only if you want to play at home. A portable net sets up on any driveway.
- Water and sun protection: games are short, but you often play many in a row.
