Best Portable Grills for Tailgating, reviewed
Coleman RoadTrip 285 Portable Propane Grill
You need this if: you cook for a group and want a grill that stands on its own.
- PowerUp to 20,000 BTU, 3 burners
- Cooking area285 sq in
- SetupQuick-fold legs and 2 wheels
Why we recommend it: Three adjustable burners let you keep one side hot and another side gentle. It rolls from the car and stands at a working height without a table.
Keep in mind: It is bulky, so check your trunk space before you buy.
Cuisinart Chef’s Style Tabletop Grill
You need this if: you bring a table and want a compact grill.
- Power2 burners, 10,000 BTU each
- WeightListed at 22 lb
- GratesStainless steel
Why we recommend it: Two separate burners and a built-in thermometer give you real control on a small footprint. Cuisinart says it sets up in under 10 minutes.
Keep in mind: You need a stable table that can take the heat.
Coleman RoadTrip 225 Portable Propane Grill
You need this if: you like the RoadTrip idea but cook for fewer people.
- PowerUp to 11,000 BTU, 2 burners
- Cooking area225 sq in
- IgnitionInstaStart push button
Why we recommend it: It keeps the folding legs and wheels in a smaller size, and push-button starts mean no matches.
Keep in mind: With less power and space than the 285, it can slow down with a full grate.
Weber Q 1200N Portable Propane Grill
You need this if: you want a compact grill that also works at home.
- Power10,000 BTU
- Cooking area200 sq in, up to 9 burgers
- LidHigh dome for larger roasts
Why we recommend it: The high lid gives room for bigger cuts, and Weber lists a wide temperature range for searing or roasting.
Keep in mind: It has one burner, so it is less suited to cooking two foods at different heats.
Charbroil Grill2Go X200 Portable Gas Grill
You need this if: your grill will get tossed in a truck bed.
- Cooking area200 sq in, up to 8 burgers
- BuildCast-aluminum firebox and lid
- TravelStainless latches and carry handles
Why we recommend it: The latches keep the lid shut in transit, and the cast-aluminum body is built for moving around. A push button handles the start.
Keep in mind: It is designed around one cooking system, so check that style suits you.
Megamaster Tabletop 1-Burner Grill
You need this if: you want a large listed cooking area on a table.
- Power11,000 BTU, 1 burner
- Cooking areaListed at 360 sq in
- SetupFoldable legs and locking lid
Why we recommend it: The listed cooking area is large for a tabletop grill, and a warming rack keeps finished food off the direct heat.
Keep in mind: The listed area may include the warming rack. One burner also has to heat all of it.
Masterbuilt Portable Propane Grill
You need this if: you cook in batches.
- Power10,000 BTU U-shaped burner
- Cooking area288 sq in total
- BuildStainless steel with chrome warming rack
Why we recommend it: A U-shaped burner spreads the heat, and the warming rack holds food while you finish the next batch.
Keep in mind: Total cooking area includes the rack, so the main grate is smaller.
Charbroil Portable 1-Burner Grill
You need this if: you only need burgers and hot dogs for a few people.
- Cooking area190 sq in
- GratesPorcelain coated
- Warranty90 days listed
Why we recommend it: This is the simple option: one burner, easy-clean grates and a small body that fits in most trunks.
Keep in mind: The listed warranty is short, and it has fewer features than the others here.
How to choose
Match the area to your group
Around 200 sq in fits 8 or so burgers. For six or more people, look at 250 sq in or larger so nobody waits.
Decide on stand or tabletop
Stand-up grills need no table but take more trunk space. Tabletop grills are smaller, but you must bring a stable table.
Count the burners
Two or three burners let you run hot and cool zones at the same time. One burner is simpler but less flexible.
Check the fuel
Most portable grills run on 1 lb propane cylinders, and some can use a bulk tank with an adapter. Bring a spare.
Got questions?
Frequently asked questions
What is the best grill size for tailgating?
For two to four people, 200 sq in is usually enough. For a larger group, look at 285 sq in or more.
Are charcoal or propane grills better for tailgating?
Propane is usually easier because it starts fast and leaves no hot coals. Many lots also have rules about disposing of coals.
Can you grill at every stadium?
No. Rules vary, so check your stadium or lot rules for open flames before you go.
How do I transport a grill after cooking?
Turn off the gas, disconnect the cylinder and let the grill cool fully before you pack it. Never store propane cylinders in a closed, hot vehicle.
Do I need a table?
Tabletop grills need a stable, heat-safe surface. Stand-up grills like the RoadTrip series do not.
