Shin guard size guide for kids

Shin guards are sized by your child’s height, not shoe size. Brands differ, but a typical guide looks like this:

SizeChild height (about)Age (about)
XS3 ft to 3 ft 7 in3 to 5
S3 ft 7 in to 4 ft 7 in5 to 9
M4 ft 7 in to 5 ft 3 in9 to 12
L5 ft 3 in and up12 and up

The right length: the guard should cover from about two inches above the ankle to two inches below the knee, and must not dig into the knee when your child bends it.

Slip-in, strap or sock style: which is best?

Slip-in guards with sleeves

A light guard slides into a compression sleeve with a pocket. This is what most older kids and adults use, because it feels the least bulky and does not slip when fitted well. The Northdeer guards work this way.

Strap guards

The guard has one or two hook-and-loop straps around the calf. They are quick to put on, which suits kids who get dressed in the car on the way to games. The Franklin Superlight uses double straps.

Sock-style and ankle guards

The guard sits inside a soft sleeve or sock, sometimes with an ankle pad. They are easiest for little kids to put on themselves but can get hot and bulky.

Common shin guard mistakes parents make

  • Buying too big to grow into. A guard that is too long digs into the knee or ankle and gets pulled off.
  • Socks too short. Kids’ soccer socks must go over the knee or reach just below it to cover the guard.
  • Wrong leg. Molded guards have a left and right, usually marked L and R.
  • Forgetting practices. Many leagues require guards for practices too, and that is when most knocks happen.
  • Leaving them in the bag. Damp guards smell fast. Air them out after every game.

Can kids use soccer shin guards for other sports?

Soccer shin guards are designed for kicks to the front of the shin. Field hockey, ice hockey, karate and baseball catchers need sport-specific guards with different coverage, so check the rules of each sport before reusing soccer guards.

How to wear soccer shin guards

  1. Put on the sleeve first, if your guards use one.
  2. Slide the guard into the sleeve pocket, or strap it on, with the curved side against the shin and the narrow end toward the ankle.
  3. Check left and right if the guards are molded for each leg.
  4. Pull the soccer sock up over the guard, all the way.
  5. Ask your child to jog and bend the knee. Nothing should slide or pinch.

Shin guards with or without ankle protection?

Some kids’ guards have a built-in ankle pad. They protect the ankle bone from kicks, which is helpful for very young players who get stepped on a lot. They are bulkier, so most kids switch to slip-in or strap guards by about age 8 or 9.

Shin guards for kids with sensory issues

Some kids dislike the feel of hard guards or tight sleeves. Light guards like the Franklin Superlight, soft padded backing, and letting your child practise wearing them at home can help. Sock-style guards, with the guard built into a soft sleeve, avoid straps altogether. Let your child choose the color, which can make them more willing to wear them.

How to clean shin guards

  • Take the guards out of the sleeves after every game and let both air-dry.
  • Wash sleeves and socks with regular laundry.
  • Wipe the guards with warm soapy water and rinse. Most hard shells should not go in the dryer.
  • A sprinkle of baking soda overnight helps with smells.

When to replace kids shin guards

Replace them when they no longer cover from just above the ankle to just below the knee, when the shell cracks, or when the padding is flat. Most kids need new guards every one or two seasons as they grow.

Complete the kit with youth soccer cleats and the right size ball from the best soccer balls. Young keepers also need goalkeeper gloves.
