What size shin guard for each age

  • Ages 3 to 5: XS. Choose guards with ankle protection and a sleeve or strap so they stay on.
  • Ages 5 to 8: S. Most U6 and U8 players.
  • Ages 9 to 12: M. Most U10 and U12 players.
  • Ages 13 and up: L for most players, XL for tall teens.

How shin guards should fit

  1. The top should sit about 2 inches below the knee, so the knee can bend freely.
  2. The bottom should reach just above the ankle bone.
  3. The guard should cover most of the front of the shin, without big gaps at the sides.
  4. It should not slide down when the player runs. Use the straps, a sleeve or tape.
  5. Socks go over the shin guards. Most leagues require that guards are fully covered.

Slip-in, ankle or sleeve shin guards?

  • With ankle guards: best for young kids. They protect the ankle bones and stay in place.
  • Slip-in: light and low profile, held by a compression sleeve or tape. Popular with older players.
  • Sleeve style: the guard slides into a sleeve, which keeps it in place without straps.

Are shin guards required?

Yes. US Youth Soccer, AYSO, high school and almost every other league require shin guards in games and most practices. They must be covered by socks. Guards that are too small leave the shin open, so check the size each season.
