What do boxing glove ounces mean?

Glove "ounces" are the weight of the glove, not your hand size. Heavier gloves have more padding. That protects your partner in sparring and your knuckles and wrists on the bag. Lighter gloves feel faster but offer less protection.

Bag gloves vs sparring gloves

Bag gloves are often a little lighter with firmer padding that holds up to thousands of punches. Sparring gloves have softer, thicker padding to protect your partner, and most gyms require 16 oz for adults. If you only buy one pair, buy the sparring weight; it works on the bag too.

How boxing gloves should fit

  • With hand wraps on, your fingers should reach the end of the glove without pressing hard.
  • You should be able to make a tight fist easily.
  • The wrist strap should feel snug and supportive.
  • New leather gloves feel tight and loosen after a few sessions.

Hand wraps

Always wear hand wraps under boxing gloves. They protect the small bones in your hand and support your wrist. Adults usually use 180 inch wraps; smaller hands and kids use 108 to 120 inch wraps.

Gloves for kickboxing and MMA

Kickboxing and Muay Thai gloves follow the same ounce chart as boxing gloves. MMA training gloves are much lighter, usually 4 to 7 oz with open fingers for grappling, and are not meant for hard sparring.
