Youth pants are the most common Alleson order. Sizes run from YXS to YXL, and the waist is the number that matters. Ages are only a rough guide, because two eight-year-olds can be two sizes apart.

How to measure for Alleson pants

Alleson jersey and top sizes

Between sizes? What to do

• Kids: size up. Youth pants have room in the leg, and the elastic waist or a belt will take up the slack.
• Adult men: pick by waist, then check the inseam. If the inseam is too long, consider a knicker or wear the pant high with socks.
• Women’s fastpitch: size up, especially if you wear sliding shorts. The hip is the tight spot.
• Open-bottom pants: don’t size up “to grow into” these. A long open hem drags in the dirt and wears out.

The boys’ braid pant and men’s pants get mixed fit comments, with roughly equal reports of small and big. The women’s belt-loop fastpitch pant has the clearest pattern: more buyers say it runs small than big. For that one, size up.

Alleson vs other brands: size conversion

Most youth baseball pant brands use similar waist ranges, so an Alleson YM is close to a YM from Rawlings or Champro. The bigger differences are in the inseam and the cut. Alleson’s classic pants are relaxed, while some newer brands are slimmer. If your child wears a slim-fit brand now, the same Alleson size will feel roomier.

How Alleson pants should fit on the field

A good baseball pant lets the player squat, run and slide without pulling at the knee or the seat. Here is what a good fit looks like:

• Seat: no strain when the player squats into a fielding stance.
• Knee: the reinforced knee (on styles that have one) sits over the kneecap, not above it.
• Length: full-length pants should break at the top of the shoe. Knickers should close just below the knee.
