The Wilson A500 is the youth glove most kids should start with

Wilson’s youth gloves are named by series: A200, A450, A500, A700 and A900. The higher the number, the better the leather and the higher the price. For most kids aged 7 to 12, the A500 is the sweet spot. Below we compare each series and show which size to buy by age.

How to choose the right Wilson glove

  • Start with age and position, using the size chart above.
  • Check the throwing hand. “Right hand throw” means the glove goes on the left hand.
  • Pick the series by commitment. A200 for tee ball, A500 for most kids, A700 or A900 for travel ball.
  • Choose the web. Infielders like an open H-web or I-web for quick transfers; pitchers and outfielders like closed webs.

Breaking in a Wilson youth glove

Youth gloves break in faster than adult models, but leather still needs time. Play catch every day, close the glove around a ball and wrap it with a rubber band overnight, and use a small amount of glove conditioner. Avoid ovens, microwaves and hot water, which dry out leather.

Wilson youth gloves by position

Kids often play several positions, so most parents buy one all-round glove. If your child has settled into a position, these guidelines help.

PositionGlove size (ages 9–12)Web styleWilson pick
Second base / shortstop10.75″–11.25″Open H-web or I-webA500 infield

Catchers and first basemen need special mitts. Wilson also sells youth catcher’s mitts, and the Wilson EZ Gear 2.0 catcher’s kit pairs well for young catchers.

Top grain vs full grain leather: does it matter for kids?

Top grain leather, used in the A500, is lightly sanded and treated. It is lighter and breaks in faster, which suits young players. Full grain leather, used in the A700 and A900, is thicker and keeps its shape longer, but it is stiffer when new. For most kids under 10, top grain is the better choice because a glove that closes easily is a glove they will actually catch with. Full grain makes more sense for older kids who play many games a year and will keep the glove for two or more seasons.

How long does a Wilson youth glove last?

For a growing child, the real limit is size, not wear. Most kids need a new glove every one to two years until about age 12. A well-cared-for A500 can easily last that long. If your child is near the top of an age band, buy the bigger size so the glove lasts two seasons. Don’t jump two sizes up, though: a glove that is too big is hard to control and slows down learning.

Right hand throw or left hand throw?

This is the most common ordering mistake. “Right hand throw” (RHT) means the player throws with the right hand, so the glove is worn on the left hand. “Left hand throw” (LHT) is the opposite. If your child throws right-handed, buy RHT. Lefty gloves are made in fewer sizes and colors, so order early in the season.

Glove care checklist

  • Keep a ball in the pocket when storing the glove to hold its shape.
  • Wipe off dirt after games with a dry cloth.
  • Condition the leather lightly two or three times a season.
  • Let a wet glove air-dry at room temperature, never on a heater.
  • Check laces at the start of each season; loose laces are easy to retie.

Wilson vs Rawlings for youth gloves

Wilson and Rawlings make most of the youth gloves sold in the US. Wilson’s A500 and Rawlings’ youth lines are close in price and quality. Wilson is known for its Quick Fit wrist and Pedroia Fit option for small hands. Rawlings is known for its Sure Catch and Players series, which are very soft out of the box. If your child has a small hand or is very young, try the Wilson A200 or a Pedroia Fit model. See our best youth baseball gloves guide for all brands.

When to upgrade to an adult Wilson glove

Most players move from youth gloves to adult models like the A2000 or A1000 around age 13 or 14, when the hand fills a youth glove and the player is committed to the sport. Until then, a quality youth glove like the A500 or A900 is easier to control and helps kids catch more balls.

Gift tips

A glove makes a great gift, but sizing matters. If you are buying for someone else’s child, ask the parents about age, position and throwing hand. If you can’t ask, an 11-inch A500 RHT fits most 9- to 11-year-olds. Add a few baseballs and glove conditioner for a complete gift.
