How to measure your hand
- Hold the batting hand flat, fingers together.
- Measure from the crease where the palm meets the wrist to the tip of the middle finger.
- Round to the nearest quarter inch.
- Find the range on the chart. If you are on the line, read “Between sizes” below.
Between sizes?
- Kids: size up. Hands grow fast, and a little extra room in the fingertips is fine.
- Adults: size down for a snug, “second skin” feel, especially in leather gloves that stretch.
- Wearing under a fielding glove: size down so the batting glove doesn’t bunch.
Youth vs adult Franklin gloves
Youth XL and adult S overlap in hand length. The difference is the cut: adult gloves are a little wider through the palm and longer in the fingers. Teens with slim hands often fit youth XL better; teens with broad hands should go adult S or M.

Franklin batting glove size by age (quick guide)

| 5–7 | Youth S |
| 7–9 | Youth M |
| 9–11 | Youth L |

How a batting glove should fit
- Fingertips: no more than about a quarter inch of empty space at the ends.
- Palm: smooth, without wrinkles that can cause blisters.
- Wrist: the strap closes firmly without overlapping too far.
- Grip test: make a fist around a bat handle. The glove should flex without pulling across the knuckles.
Why wear batting gloves at all?
Batting gloves improve grip, cut down on blisters and reduce the sting from mishits, especially on cold spring days with aluminum bats. They also keep the bat handle dry when hands sweat. Many youth players also wear one batting glove inside their fielding glove for extra padding.
How long do Franklin batting gloves last?
For a youth player in one league, a pair usually lasts a season. High school and travel players who take many swings a week may go through two or three pairs a season, since leather palms wear thin at the base of the thumb. Rotating two pairs helps each last longer, and lets one pair dry while you use the other.
Caring for batting gloves
- Let gloves air-dry after every use; don’t leave them balled up in a bag.
- Hand-wash in cold water with mild soap when they get dirty or smelly.
- Don’t put them in the dryer; heat stiffens and shrinks leather.
- Store them flat or loosely folded, out of hot cars.
Common sizing mistakes
- Buying by age only. Hand size varies a lot. Measure.
- Sizing adults up “for comfort”. Leather stretches, so the glove gets looser over time.
- Mixing youth and adult charts. Youth XL and adult S overlap; pick by hand width too.
- Ignoring the cuff. Long-cuff styles like the Powerstrap fit differently at the wrist than short-cuff gloves.
Franklin vs other brands
Franklin is the top seller in Amazon’s batting gloves list, with the CFX Pro at number one and several others in the top ten. Brands like Bruce Bolt, Louisville Slugger and Rawlings use similar hand-length sizing, so your measured size usually carries over. Franklin’s strength is the range of youth sizes and colors at friendly prices.
Batting gloves for tee ball and young kids
Tee ball players don’t strictly need batting gloves, but many kids love wearing them because the pros do, and they do help with grip on slippery plastic or aluminum bats. Look for the smallest youth size or a dedicated tee ball glove, like the Franklin Teeball Flexible Pro. Velcro wrist straps are easier for small kids than pull-on cuffs. Buy in bright colors so they are easy to find in the dugout.
Gift tip
Batting gloves make an easy gift for a young player, but sizing matters. If you can’t measure the child’s hand, ask a parent for their glove size from last season and go up one size. Pair the gloves with a bat grip, a few practice balls or a bat bag for a complete gift. See our gifts for baseball players guide for more ideas.
Got questions?
Frequently asked questions
How do Franklin batting gloves fit?
Most fit true to size by hand length. Leather palms stretch slightly with use.
What size batting gloves for a 10-year-old?
Usually youth M or L. Measure the hand: 6.25 to 6.75 inches is youth M, and 6.75 to 7 inches is youth L.
What size batting gloves for a 5-year-old?
Usually youth XS, or a tee ball glove like the Franklin Teeball Flexible Pro.
Should batting gloves be tight?
Snug, with no loose fabric at the fingertips or palm, but not so tight that you can’t make a fist.
Do Franklin batting gloves shrink?
Leather can stiffen if washed hot. Hand-wash cold and air-dry to keep the fit.
