The first Thanksgiving Eve game

For the first time, the NFL is playing a game on the night before Thanksgiving. The Packers visit the Rams on Wednesday, November 25, streamed on Netflix. That makes 2026 the first season with a full Wednesday-to-Friday run of holiday football.

Why the Lions and Cowboys always play on Thanksgiving

The Detroit Lions have hosted a Thanksgiving game almost every year since 1934, and the Dallas Cowboys have hosted one nearly every year since 1966. Both are part of the holiday tradition, so the 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. games are always in Detroit and Dallas. The night game moves around the league; this year it is a playoff-style matchup in Buffalo.

How to plan a Thanksgiving football day

  1. Set dinner around the games. With kickoffs at 1:00, 4:30 and 8:20 p.m. ET, many families eat between the second and third games.
  2. Make one screen the "game screen". If the kitchen and living room are full, a projector or outdoor TV on the patio gives the football fans their own space.
  3. Plan for kids. A foam or junior football and 20 minutes outside at halftime is a family tradition in many homes.
  4. Going to the game? Late-November nights are cold in Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Dress in layers, bring a stadium blanket and check the clear bag rules before you leave.
