The best fastpitch softball bats
Fastpitch bats are lighter and thinner-handled than baseball bats, with a 2 1/4 inch barrel and a big “drop” so young players can swing fast. The right bat is the right length, a weight your player can control, and approved for her league. Most rec leagues and many travel leagues accept bats approved for all fields (USA Softball, USSSA, NSA and others), so checking stamps matters.
We compared the best-selling fastpitch bats on Amazon on drop, construction, approvals, ratings and what parents and players say. Below is one clear bat for each player, plus a sizing chart and tips to choose the right drop.

Quick answer: the best fastpitch bats
- Best overallEaston Cyclone · -10 · approved for all fields
- Best for beginnersEaston Sapphire · -10 · 4.9★
- Best alternativeEaston Topaz · -10 · approved for all fields
- Best youth upgradeEaston Ghost Youth · -11 · lighter swing
If you want one answer: buy the Easton Cyclone. It is the best-reviewed value fastpitch bat on Amazon, a one-piece aluminum -10 approved for play on all fields, so it works in almost any league. For a first bat, the Easton Sapphire is light, affordable and rated 4.9 stars. For a very light swing, the Easton Ghost Youth at -11 is ideal for younger players.
Fastpitch bat size chart
| Age | Height | Bat length | Typical drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 to 7 | 3 ft 6 in to 4 ft | 24 to 26 in | -12 to -13 |
| 8 to 9 | 4 ft to 4 ft 6 in | 27 to 28 in | -11 to -12 |
| 10 to 11 | 4 ft 6 in to 5 ft | 28 to 30 in | -10 to -11 |
| 12 to 13 | 5 ft to 5 ft 4 in | 30 to 31 in | -10 |
| 14 and up | 5 ft 4 in and up | 31 to 34 in | -9 to -10 |
For a quick fit test, stand the bat next to your player: the knob should reach the middle of her palm with her arm hanging at her side. If she can hold the bat straight out to the side for 10 seconds, the weight is manageable. See our softball bat size chart for more detail.
What drop should you choose?
Drop is length minus weight. A 30 inch, 20 ounce bat is a -10. Higher drops (-11, -12, -13) are lighter and easier to swing for young or developing players. Lower drops (-9, -8) are heavier for strong high school hitters. Most players between 10 and 14 use -10. When in doubt, choose the lighter bat; bat speed matters more than bat weight for young hitters.
Check league approvals
Fastpitch organisations include USA Softball, USSSA, NSA, ISA, ISF and others. Bats “approved for all fields” carry the stamps for the major associations. Always check your league’s rules, especially for travel ball and school softball, which can have specific requirements.
The best fastpitch bats, reviewed

Easton Cyclone Fastpitch Softball Bat
You need this if: you want a proven, affordable bat approved for nearly every league.
- Drop-10
- Build1-piece aluminum
- Barrel2 1/4 in
- ApprovalApproved for all fields
- Rating4.6★, nearly 900 ratings
Why we recommend it: The Cyclone is Easton’s long-running value fastpitch bat and the best-reviewed bat in its price range. One-piece aluminum is durable and stiff for good energy transfer, and the all-fields approval means you can use it in rec, school and many travel leagues.
Keep in mind: Aluminum bats sting more on mishits than two-piece composites. Batting gloves help.

Easton Sapphire Fastpitch Softball Bat
You need this if: your daughter is starting fastpitch and needs a light, affordable first bat.
- Drop-10
- Build1-piece alloy
- ApprovalApproved for all fields
- Rating4.9★, nearly 200 ratings
Why we recommend it: It has one of the highest ratings of any fastpitch bat on Amazon. It is light, affordable and approved for all fields, so beginners can use it in any rec league, and the bright design is popular with young players.
Keep in mind: Fewer reviews than the Cyclone, and as a beginner bat it is not designed for the hardest-hitting high school players.

Easton Topaz Fastpitch Softball Bat
You need this if: you want a Sapphire-style beginner bat in a different look or length option.
- Drop-10
- Build1-piece alloy
- ApprovalApproved for all fields
- Rating4.7★, 200+ ratings
Why we recommend it: The Topaz is another affordable, all-fields approved -10 alloy bat from Easton, with strong reviews. Choose it if it is in stock in your length or your player prefers the design.
Keep in mind: Like the Sapphire, it is aimed at beginners and rec players.

Easton Ghost Youth Fastpitch Softball Bat
You need this if: your player is about 7 to 11 and needs a very light, quick-swinging bat.
- Drop-11
- Build1-piece aluminum
- LineEaston Ghost (youth version)
- Rating4.3★, 600+ ratings
Why we recommend it: The Ghost name is Easton’s top fastpitch line, and this youth version gives young players a lighter -11 drop for faster bat speed. It is a popular step up from basic first bats.
Keep in mind: This youth model is one-piece aluminum, not the composite Ghost used by older travel players, and it has more mixed reviews than the Cyclone.
Fastpitch bats compared
| Bat | Drop | Build | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easton Cyclone | -10 | 1-pc aluminum | 4.6★ (900) |
| Easton Sapphire | -10 | 1-pc alloy | 4.9★ (200) |
| Easton Topaz | -10 | 1-pc alloy | 4.7★ (200+) |
| Easton Ghost Youth | -11 | 1-pc aluminum | 4.3★ (600+) |
Aluminum vs composite fastpitch bats
Aluminum (alloy) bats are ready to use right away, durable in cold weather and cheaper. They sting more on mishits. Composite bats need a break-in period, absorb vibration better and often have a bigger sweet spot, but they cost much more and can crack in cold weather. For players under about 12 and rec leagues, a quality alloy bat like the Cyclone is the smart choice. Serious travel and high school hitters often move to two-piece composite bats.
One-piece vs two-piece
One-piece bats are stiff, giving good feedback and energy transfer, and they suit contact hitters and power hitters with good mechanics. Two-piece bats join the handle and barrel, adding flex and reducing sting. Beginners usually start with one-piece alloy bats.
Hitting tips for young fastpitch players
- Choose a bat light enough to swing quickly; slow bats miss pitches.
- Practise off a tee daily; see our best batting tees.
- Use soft toss and practice balls at home; see our practice balls guide.
- Keep the hands inside the ball and the barrel level through the zone.
- Wear batting gloves to reduce sting; see our best batting gloves.
Bat care
Store bats indoors at room temperature. Do not use alloy or composite bats in very cold weather below about 60°F if the maker warns against it, and never hit heavy rubber batting cage balls with composite bats. Rotate the bat a quarter turn each swing to spread wear, and keep it in a bat bag between games.
Our verdict
The Easton Cyclone is the best fastpitch bat for most players: approved for all fields, durable and well priced. Choose the Easton Sapphire or Topaz for a first bat, and the Easton Ghost Youth for a very light youth swing.
Why so many Easton picks?
When we looked at Amazon’s best-selling fastpitch bats, Easton dominated the list, with models from first bats to elite travel bats. That reflects how popular the brand is in American fastpitch. Other strong brands, such as DeMarini, Louisville Slugger and Rawlings, make excellent bats too, but on Amazon their youth fastpitch models had far fewer reviews when we checked, so we stuck with the bats parents have rated most.
How long does a fastpitch bat last?
An alloy bat can last several seasons, so most families replace it because the player grows, not because it breaks. A good rule is to move up a size when the player grows about 2 inches or when the current bat feels too light and easy. Composite bats may crack eventually, especially in cold weather, and many come with a one-year warranty.
Contact hitter vs power hitter
Contact hitters who rely on bat speed and placing the ball should choose a lighter, balanced bat. Power hitters with strong, consistent swings may prefer an end-loaded bat with more weight toward the barrel, usually at higher levels and with lower drops. Most players under 12 should prioritise a light, balanced bat to develop good mechanics.
Batting cage tips
Use regular softballs or cage balls approved by the bat maker. Heavy, dimpled pitching-machine balls can dent alloy bats and crack composite ones. Rotate between your game bat and a cheaper practice bat for long cage sessions.
Common bat-buying mistakes
- Buying a bat too long or heavy “to grow into”, which slows the swing.
- Ignoring league stamps for travel and school softball.
- Choosing a baseball bat for fastpitch.
- Using a composite bat in freezing temperatures.
- Picking by color instead of length and weight.
Bat bags and accessories
A bat bag protects bats from dents and keeps gear organised. Bat grips can be replaced when they wear. See our best youth bat bags for backpacks that hold two bats, a glove and cleats.
A simple at-home hitting routine
- 10 tee swings at belt height, focusing on a level barrel.
- 10 tee swings on the inside pitch, contact out front.
- 10 tee swings on the outside pitch, letting the ball travel.
- 3 rounds of 10 soft toss swings from the side.
- Finish with 5 slow-motion swings checking your finish position.
Twenty minutes, three or four times a week, builds a reliable swing faster than one long weekend session.
Fastpitch bats as gifts
A new bat is one of the most exciting gifts a young fastpitch player can receive, especially before tryouts. Measure height and check league approvals first, or give a gift card with a printed size chart. Pair it with batting gloves or a bat bag for a complete present.
