The best tee ball bats

Your child’s first real bat should be light enough to swing level, short enough to control and approved for their league. Tee ball bats are made for ages about 4 to 7: they are short (usually 24 to 26 inches), very light, and have a small 2 1/4 inch barrel. Most leagues also require the USA Baseball stamp.

We compared the best-selling tee ball bats on Amazon on weight, drop, league approval, ratings and what thousands of parents say. Below is one clear pick for each need, a sizing chart, and tips to help your child hit off the tee with confidence.

If you want one answer: buy the Rawlings Remix T-Ball Bat. For very small or young players, the Easton Moxie at -13 is even lighter. For backyard play with toddlers who are not in a league yet, a simple Franklin bat and ball set is all you need.

4 to 540 to 44 in24 to 25 in12 to 13 oz
5 to 644 to 48 in25 to 26 in13 to 14 oz
6 to 746 to 50 in26 in14 oz

A quick check: stand the bat next to your child. The knob should reach about the middle of their hip. If they can hold the bat straight out to the side with one arm for 10 seconds without it dropping, the weight is fine. For more detail, see our bat size by age guide and bat size calculator.

What does “drop” mean?

Drop is the bat’s length in inches minus its weight in ounces. A 25 inch bat weighing 13 ounces is a -12. A bigger drop number means a lighter bat for its length. Tee ball bats are usually -10 to -13. Lighter bats (-12, -13) let young kids swing faster and more level, which means more contact and more fun.

Do tee ball bats need the USA Baseball stamp?

Most youth organizations, including Little League, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, AABC, PONY and Dixie, require bats with the USA Baseball stamp for players 14 and under. Tee ball bats are made to this standard. Always check your league’s rules before you buy, and look for the USA Baseball logo on the bat and in the listing.

How to choose a tee ball bat

League rules first. Find out whether your league needs the USA Baseball stamp. Most do.

Length by height. 24 to 26 inches covers almost every tee ball player. Too long and they cannot control it; too short and they reach for the ball.

Weight matters most. Choose the lightest bat your child can control. A heavy bat leads to dropping the shoulder and uppercut swings.

Grip size. Tee ball bats have thin handles for small hands. A cushioned grip helps reduce sting on mishits.

Durability. One-piece aluminum bats last for years and are often handed down to younger siblings.

Tips to help kids hit off the tee

  • Set the tee so the ball is at belt height.
  • Feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, eyes on the ball.
  • Hands together on the grip, knuckles roughly lined up.
  • Swing level and follow through toward the pitcher’s mound.
  • Keep sessions short and fun, 10 to 15 minutes, with lots of praise.
  • Use soft practice balls at home to protect windows and siblings.

A good tee makes practice easier; see our best batting tees.

Aluminum vs composite vs wood for tee ball

Almost all tee ball bats are one-piece aluminum, which is light, durable and affordable. Composite bats are rare at this level and not needed. Wood bats are too heavy for young kids. Stick with aluminum until your child moves up to coach pitch or machine pitch.

When to move up from a tee ball bat

Most kids move to a youth baseball bat at about age 7 or 8, when they start coach pitch or kid pitch. Signs it is time: the bat looks short next to them, they swing it easily with one hand, or the league moves to a faster game. See our best youth baseball bats.

Everything else your tee ball player needs

Besides a bat, tee ball players need a glove sized for their age, a batting helmet (usually provided by the league, but many families buy their own), cleats or sneakers, and a bag to carry it all. See our youth baseball gloves, youth baseball cleats and youth bat bags.

Our verdict

The Rawlings Remix is the best tee ball bat for most kids: approved, light and loved by thousands of parents. Choose the Rawlings Raptor for a different design, the Easton Moxie for the lightest swing, the Franklin Venom for value, and a Franklin bat and ball set for toddlers.

What happens at tee ball practice?

Tee ball is designed to be a fun first taste of baseball. Instead of pitching, each batter hits a ball off a tee at home plate, so every child gets to make contact. Games are short, outs are often not counted, and coaches focus on running the bases the right way, throwing to first and catching easy grounders. A light, properly sized bat makes the most important part, hitting, much more enjoyable, and children who succeed early tend to stick with the sport.

Should you buy a bat or use the team bats?

Many tee ball teams share a few bats in the dugout. That works, but shared bats are rarely the right size for every child. Having your own bat means the length and weight are right, your child gets used to it during backyard practice, and there is no waiting in line. Tee ball bats are affordable, and a good aluminum bat often lasts long enough to pass to a younger sibling.

Common tee ball bat mistakes

  • Buying a youth bat that is too long and heavy “to grow into”.
  • Ignoring the league’s USA Baseball stamp rule.
  • Choosing by colour alone without checking length.
  • Practising with hard baseballs near windows; use soft practice balls at home.
