The best ab rollers

An ab roller is one of the cheapest and most effective pieces of home gym equipment. Rolling out from your knees and pulling back works your whole core, including the deep muscles that hold your spine steady, plus shoulders, lats and arms. It takes up almost no space and costs less than a month at most gyms.

We compared the best-selling ab rollers on Amazon on wheel design, stability, grip comfort, knee padding and what tens of thousands of buyers say. Below is one clear pick for each level, from complete beginners to advanced trainees, plus the safest way to start.

  • FeatureBuilt-in spring (kinetic engine)
  • HandlesErgonomic grips
  • IncludesKnee pad (check listing)
  • Rating4.6★, 14,000+ ratings

Why we recommend it: The spring inside the wheel stores energy as you roll out and helps you return, so beginners can complete reps with good form while they build strength. The curved carbon steel design also adds stability.

How to use an ab roller safely

  1. Kneel on a pad with the wheel under your shoulders and arms straight.
  2. Brace your core as if someone is about to poke your stomach, and tuck your pelvis slightly.
  3. Roll forward slowly only as far as you can keep your back flat. Do not let your hips sag.
  4. Pull back to the start using your abs, not by bending at the hips.
  5. Start with 3 sets of 5 short rollouts and add distance and reps over weeks.

If you feel it in your lower back, you have gone too far. Shorten the roll.

Ab roller progression

  • Week 1 to 2: short kneeling rollouts, rolling toward a wall to limit distance.
  • Week 3 to 4: longer kneeling rollouts.
  • Week 5 to 8: full kneeling rollouts, 3 sets of 10.
  • Advanced: standing rollouts from your toes, only when kneeling rollouts are easy with perfect form.

Ab roller workouts

Beginner (10 minutes): 3 rounds of 6 short rollouts, 20 second plank, 10 dead bugs. Intermediate: 4 rounds of 10 full rollouts, 10 oblique rollouts to each side, 30 second hollow hold. Advanced: 5 rounds of 8 standing or near-standing rollouts plus side planks. Train core two or three times a week, not every day, to give muscles time to recover.

What muscles does an ab roller work?

The main target is the rectus abdominis, the “six pack” muscle, along with the transverse abdominis, the deep corset muscle that stabilises your spine. It also works the obliques, lats, shoulders, triceps, chest and hip flexors. That makes it one of the most complete core exercises, and many studies of core exercises rank rollouts among the most demanding for the abs.

Who should avoid ab rollers?

People with current lower back pain, recent abdominal surgery, hernias, diastasis recti or pregnancy should talk to a doctor or physical therapist first. Start with easier core exercises such as planks and dead bugs if rollouts feel too hard.

Our verdict

The Ab Roller Wheel with Knee Pad is the best ab roller for most people: stable, comfortable and loved by more than 23,000 buyers. Choose the Perfect Fitness Ab Carver if you are a beginner or want help returning, the DMoose for elbow support, and the 10-in-1 kit for a complete starter set.

Ab roller vs crunches vs planks

Crunches mostly work the front of the abs through a small range of motion and can strain the neck. Planks train the core to resist movement, which is great for posture and back health, but they become easy once you can hold them for a minute or two. Ab rollouts combine the best of both: they train the core to resist your back arching while the arms move a long lever away from the body. That makes them much harder than planks and easy to progress, simply by rolling further. A good routine uses all three, with rollouts as the main strength move.

Common ab roller mistakes

  • Letting the hips sag: the lower back arches and takes the load. Keep a slight posterior pelvic tilt.
  • Rolling too far too soon: go only as far as you can return with a flat back.
  • Pulling with the hips: sitting back onto your heels turns it into a hip exercise. Keep hips moving with the torso.
  • Holding your breath for long sets: breathe out as you pull back.
  • Training every day: abs need recovery like any muscle.

Using a wall to learn

A simple trick for beginners is to kneel facing a wall, a short distance away. Roll out until the wheel touches the wall, then pull back. The wall limits how far you can go, so you can practise good form safely. Each week, move a little further from the wall until you can do full rollouts without it.

Floors and storage

Ab wheels work best on carpet, a yoga mat or a rubber gym floor. Very smooth floors can make the wheel slide too fast for beginners, while thick carpet slows it down and makes rollouts easier. Most wheels come apart or are small enough to slide under a bed or into a closet, which makes them ideal for apartments.

Ab rollers as gifts

An ab roller is an inexpensive, useful gift for anyone starting a home fitness routine, especially paired with a yoga mat or resistance bands. See our best fitness gifts and gifts for gym lovers.

Oblique rollouts and variations

Once regular rollouts feel solid, try angling the roll diagonally to the left and right to work the obliques. You can also pause for two seconds at the furthest point, roll out slowly over five seconds, or do rollouts from a plank position on your toes. Each variation makes the same simple tool feel new and challenging, which is why an ab wheel can last years in a home gym.

How long until you see results?

Most people feel their core getting stronger within two to four weeks of training two or three times a week, and can roll noticeably further. Visible changes depend more on overall body fat, which comes from diet, sleep and total activity. Pair core training with regular exercise and good nutrition for the best results.

Got questions?

Frequently asked questions

Do ab rollers really work?

Yes. Rollouts are one of the most demanding core exercises and work the abs, obliques, shoulders and lats together.

Are ab rollers good for beginners?

Yes, if you start with short rollouts from your knees or use an assisted roller like the Ab Carver.

How often should I use an ab roller?

Two or three times a week, with rest days between.

Why does my lower back hurt with an ab roller?

Usually because you roll too far and your hips sag. Shorten the movement and brace your core.

Will an ab roller give me a six pack?

It strengthens your abs, but visible abs also depend on body fat, which is mostly diet.

Single or double wheel?

Wider or double wheels are more stable for beginners; single thin wheels are harder and more advanced.
