The best dip stations

Dips are one of the best bodyweight exercises for the chest, triceps and shoulders, and a dip station lets you do them at home without a full gym. Parallel dip bars are also brilliant for L-sits, knee raises, inverted rows and push-up variations, all in a footprint smaller than a doormat.

We compared the best-selling dip stations on Amazon on stability, weight capacity, adjustability and what thousands of buyers say. Below is one clear pick for each need, plus how to do dips safely and a simple progression for beginners.

What to look for in a dip station

Stability: a wide base and a connector bar between the two sides stop wobbling. Weight capacity: choose one rated well above your body weight. Height: your feet should clear the floor at the bottom of a dip, or you will need to bend your knees. Width: bars about shoulder-width apart suit most people; adjustable width helps if you are very broad or narrow. Grips: foam or rubber grips help in sweaty sessions.

How to do dips safely

  1. Grip the bars, jump or step up and lock your arms straight.
  2. Lean slightly forward for more chest, or stay upright for more triceps.
  3. Lower slowly until your upper arms are about parallel to the floor. Do not drop deeper if it hurts your shoulders.
  4. Press back up to straight arms.
  5. Keep shoulders down away from your ears throughout.

Beginner dip progression

  • Bench dips: hands on a bench or chair, feet on the floor.
  • Negative dips: jump to the top, lower slowly over 3 to 5 seconds.
  • Band-assisted dips: a resistance band under the knees helps you up.
  • Full dips: 3 sets of 5 to 8, building to 3 sets of 12 to 15.
  • Weighted dips: add a weight belt or backpack once 15 easy reps is simple.

Other exercises on a dip station

  • L-sit: hold yourself up and raise straight legs in front. Great for abs.
  • Knee raises: lift knees to chest from a straight-arm hold.
  • Inverted rows: lie underneath and pull your chest to the bars (low stations only).
  • Incline and decline push-ups: hands or feet on the bars.
  • Leg raises: for lower abs and hip flexors.

Dip station vs power tower

A dip station is small, cheap and easy to move. A power tower adds a pull-up bar and often push-up handles in one tall frame, so you can do the “big three” bodyweight moves: dips, pull-ups and push-ups. If you have the space and budget, a power tower gives more variety; see our best power towers. If space is tight, pair a dip station with a doorway pull-up bar.

Who should be careful with dips

Dips put a lot of stress on the front of the shoulder. If you have a shoulder injury or pain, ask a physical therapist first, keep the range shorter and favour push-ups. Never bounce at the bottom of a dip.

Our verdict

The RELIFE Dip Bar is the best dip station for most home gyms: sturdy, high capacity and well reviewed. Choose the Sportsroyals Adjustable for a custom fit, and the BalanceFrom Dip Station to save money.

Why dips are such a good exercise

Dips are often called the “upper body squat” because they load several big muscles at once and are easy to progress. Unlike push-ups, where you lift a portion of your body weight, dips make you lift almost all of it, so they build strength quickly. They also train the shoulder blades to stay stable and the core to stay tight. Gymnasts, calisthenics athletes and bodybuilders all rely on them, and a simple pair of bars makes them possible at home.

Chest dips vs triceps dips

Small changes in position shift the focus. For chest dips, lean your torso forward, let your elbows flare slightly and go a little deeper. For triceps dips, keep your body upright, elbows tucked close to your sides, and lower until your upper arms are parallel to the floor. Most people do a mix of both. If one version bothers your shoulders, stick with the other.

A simple home routine with a dip station

Day A: 4 sets of dips, 3 sets of inverted rows under the bars, 3 sets of knee raises. Day B: 4 sets of decline push-ups with feet on the bars, 3 sets of L-sit holds, 3 sets of band rows. Alternate days A and B two or three times a week, adding a rep or two each week.

Setting up your dip station

  • Place it on a flat, solid surface. A rubber gym mat stops sliding and protects floors.
  • Check all bolts after the first week and every month after.
  • Leave space around it for your legs and for stepping on and off safely.
  • Adjust height so your feet clear the floor at the bottom, or plan to bend your knees.

Dip belts and adding weight

When bodyweight dips become easy for 15 or more reps, add weight with a dip belt that hangs a plate or kettlebell between your legs, or wear a loaded backpack. Increase slowly, five pounds at a time, and keep the same controlled depth. Always check the station’s weight rating includes your body weight plus the added load.

Dip stations for small spaces

Dip stations are one of the most space-efficient pieces of home gym equipment. Most fit in a corner of a bedroom or garage and can be moved easily. If you are building a full small-space home gym, see our home gym equipment for small spaces.

Common dip mistakes

  • Going too deep: dropping far below parallel strains the front of the shoulder.
  • Shrugging: shoulders creeping up to the ears; keep them pressed down.
  • Swinging: using momentum instead of control. Pause briefly at the bottom.
  • Flaring elbows wide: keep them pointing back or slightly out.
  • Skipping the warm-up: do arm circles and a few push-ups first.

Who benefits most from a dip station

Calisthenics fans, people building a minimalist home gym, runners and cyclists who want upper-body strength without big equipment, and older adults working on pushing strength with bench or assisted dips. Teens can use dip stations too, with supervision and good form.

Dip stations as gifts

A dip station is a practical gift for anyone who trains at home, and it pairs well with a pull-up bar or resistance bands. See our gifts for gym lovers for more ideas.

Care and safety

Wipe grips after sweaty sessions, keep the frame dry to prevent rust in garages, and replace worn foam grips. Never let children climb or swing on a dip station unsupervised, and do not exceed the stated weight capacity.

Value math

A dip station usually costs less than a single month at many gyms, takes up almost no space and can last for years. For the number of exercises it enables, it is one of the best-value purchases in home fitness.

Got questions?

Frequently asked questions

Are dip stations worth it?

Yes. They are cheap, compact and let you do dips, L-sits and rows, some of the best bodyweight exercises.

What muscles do dips work?

Mainly the chest, triceps and front shoulders, plus the core for stability.

How high should a dip station be?

High enough that your feet clear the floor at the bottom of a dip, or you can bend your knees.

Can beginners do dips?

Yes, starting with bench dips, negatives or band-assisted dips.

Are dips bad for shoulders?

Not when done with control and a sensible depth. Stop if you feel pain in the front of the shoulder.

Dip station or power tower?

A power tower adds a pull-up bar. Choose a dip station if space or budget is limited.
