What is a USA Baseball bat?

Since 2018, Little League, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, PONY, AABC and Dixie Youth have required bats with the USA Baseball stamp. These bats are tested to perform more like wood, which makes the game safer and more about skill. Barrels can be up to 2 5/8″ (“big barrel”). A bat without the stamp, such as an older or USSSA-only bat, can be ruled illegal in games.

BarrelUp to 2 5/8″Up to 2 3/4″
Legal in Little League?YesNo

If your child plays both rec and travel ball, they may need two bats. Check each league’s rules before buying.

How to choose a youth baseball bat

  1. Check your league for the required stamp.
  2. Get the length from height and the calculator.
  3. Choose the drop: -10 to -13 for most kids under 11, heavier only for strong older players.
  4. Do the hold test: your child holds the bat straight out to the side for about 10 seconds. If the barrel drops, it’s too heavy.
  5. Choose alloy or composite: alloy is cheaper and ready to go, composite has less sting but costs more.

Best bat for a 7, 8 or 9-year-old

7-year-olds are usually moving from t-ball to coach pitch. A light -12 or -13 bat around 26″ to 27″, like the Rawlings Raptor, keeps the swing quick. 8 and 9-year-olds face kid-pitch for the first time in many leagues, so they need a bat they can control against faster pitching. A -10 or -11 bat around 27″ to 29″, like the Rawlings Remix, fits most players this age. Use height to fine-tune the length.

PriceUsually $40 to $100Usually $100 and up
Best forMost kids, especially growing onesOlder players who play every season

Because kids outgrow bats every one to two seasons, an alloy bat is the smart buy for most families.

One-piece vs two-piece youth bats

One-piece bats are made from a single piece of metal. They’re stiff, often cheaper and good for stronger hitters who square up the ball. Two-piece bats connect the handle and barrel, which adds flex and reduces vibration. That helps younger kids who hate the sting of a mishit.

When to move up a bat size

  • Your child has grown about 2 inches since you bought the bat.
  • They pass the 10-second hold test easily and swing level with speed.
  • They’ve moved up to a league with faster pitching or a bigger field.

Move up one inch at a time, and don’t change length and drop at the same time.

Caring for a youth bat

  • Don’t hit heavy batting-cage balls or rocks with it.
  • Rotate the bat a quarter turn after each hit, so the barrel wears evenly.
  • Store it indoors, not in a hot car or freezing garage.
  • Replace worn grip tape for comfort and a better grip.

Common youth bat mistakes

  • Buying a bat to “grow into”, which slows the swing and builds bad habits.
  • Buying a USSSA bat for a Little League player.
  • Choosing the heaviest drop because older kids use it.
  • Using a composite bat in cold weather, which can crack it.

Best bat for an 11 or 12-year-old

At 11 and 12, players’ size and strength vary the most. Many still swing best with a -10 or -11 bat around 29″ to 31″. Stronger players who pass the hold test easily can step up to a heavier drop, such as the Easton Quantum in -5, which also prepares them for the -3 BBCOR bats used in high school. For 12U all-star or travel play, check whether your tournament uses USA or USSSA rules before choosing.

Bat weight and swing speed

Young hitters get more from bat speed than from bat weight. A lighter bat lets them wait longer on the pitch, adjust mid-swing and keep the barrel level, which leads to more solid contact. If your child’s swing looks slow, drops the barrel or loops long, the bat is too heavy, even if it’s the “right” size on paper.

Should kids practice with a wood bat?

A wood bat is a great practice tool. It has a smaller sweet spot, so it rewards good contact and builds better habits. Many coaches use wood or wood-composite bats for tee and soft-toss work. For games, stick with a USA Baseball stamped bat, which is what most youth leagues require.
