Driver Loft and Shaft Flex Calculator
Enter your swing speed or driver carry distance to find the right driver loft and shaft flex, with tips for slices and low shots.

What driver loft should I use?
Golfers with a swing speed under 85 mph usually do best with 12° or more. Between 85 and 95 mph, try 10.5° to 12°. Faster swingers over 95 mph often use 9° to 10.5°. Most amateurs use too little loft, so when in doubt, go higher.

Driver loft chart by swing speed
| Swing speed | Typical carry | Driver loft |
|---|---|---|
| Under 75 mph | Under 190 yd | 12° to 15° |
| 75 to 85 mph | 190 to 210 yd | 12° to 13° |
| 85 to 95 mph | 210 to 235 yd | 10.5° to 12° |
| 95 to 105 mph | 235 to 260 yd | 9.5° to 10.5° |
| Over 105 mph | Over 260 yd | 8° to 9.5° |
Carry is roughly 2.5 yards per mph of swing speed for a solid hit. Mishits, wind and ball type change this a lot, so swing speed is the better number if you can get it.
Golf shaft flex chart
| Driver swing speed | Shaft flex | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Under 72 mph | L (ladies) | Most women and slower swingers |
| 72 to 84 mph | A (senior) | Seniors and smooth swingers |
| 85 to 95 mph | R (regular) | Most male amateurs |
| 96 to 105 mph | S (stiff) | Strong, fast swingers |
| Over 105 mph | X (extra stiff) | Very fast swingers and pros |
If you are between two flexes, a fast, aggressive transition suits the stiffer shaft, and a smooth tempo suits the softer one.
Why more loft helps most golfers
Many amateurs buy 9° drivers because tour pros use them. But pros swing 110 mph or faster. At normal speeds, low loft launches the ball too low and adds side spin, so slices curve more. More loft raises the launch, keeps the ball in the air longer and usually makes it straighter. Studies with launch monitors show most golfers under 95 mph gain carry distance with 10.5° to 12°.
Adjustable drivers
Most modern drivers have an adjustable hosel that changes loft by about 1° to 2° either way. This is a cheap way to test: start at your recommended loft, then move up or down one setting and compare carry and dispersion on a launch monitor or at the range.
How to find your swing speed
- Launch monitor: the most accurate way. A home launch monitor also tracks carry, launch and spin.
- Range or golf shop: many ranges and shops have simulators you can use for free or a small fee.
- Carry distance: divide your average driver carry by 2.5 for a rough estimate.

Frequently asked questions
What loft driver should a beginner use?
Most beginners do best with 10.5° to 12°, or even higher. More loft makes it easier to get the ball in the air and reduces slice spin.
Is 9 or 10.5 degree better?
For most amateurs, 10.5°. A 9° driver suits golfers who swing faster than about 100 mph and hit up on the ball.
What shaft flex for a 90 mph swing speed?
Regular flex suits most golfers with a 90 mph driver swing.
Does loft affect a slice?
Yes. More loft reduces side spin, so a slice curves less. A draw-biased driver also helps.
How far should I hit my driver at 85 mph?
About 200 to 215 yards of carry with solid contact.
Should seniors use a senior flex?
If your driver swing speed is under about 85 mph, a senior (A) flex usually gives more distance and a better feel.
