Measure the waist where the pants sit, then choose a belt whose range includes that number near the middle, so it can be tightened or loosened as needed.
How to wear a baseball belt
- Thread it through every belt loop, so the pants stay up when sliding.
- Tighten until it’s snug but comfortable. You should be able to slide two fingers under it.
- Tuck any extra tail into the next belt loop, so it doesn’t flap.
- Wear the buckle centered on the front of the pants, unless your team has a different rule.
Matching your belt to the uniform
Most teams match the belt to the socks, usually in the team’s main color. A navy belt with navy socks and grey pants is a classic look. Check your league’s uniform rules, because many leagues assign belt and sock colors with the jersey. For socks, see our best baseball socks.
Elastic vs leather baseball belts
| Elastic (stretch) | Leather or heavy nylon | |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort | Moves with the body | Firmer |
| Fit | Very adjustable | Fixed notches |
| Durability | Good | Excellent |
| Price | Cheapest | Higher |
| Best for | Youth and team orders | Older players and long seasons |
Do baseball pants need a belt?
Most baseball and softball pants have belt loops, and a belt is part of the official uniform in many leagues. Some youth pull-on pants have an elastic waist, so a belt is optional for fit. Teams often still wear one for the uniform look. See our youth baseball pants and socks guide.
Softball belts
Softball players wear the same belts. Fastpitch pants often have belt loops sized for a standard 1.5″ baseball belt, so any belt on this page works. Many girls’ teams choose bright colors like pink, purple or Columbia blue, and Champion and Champro offer all of them.
Best youth baseball belt by age
- Ages 4 to 7: a stretch belt that’s easy to buckle, like the Champion youth belt. Little kids need to dress quickly and on their own.
- Ages 8 to 12: the Under Armour Boys’ belt adjusts as kids grow and is the top-rated youth belt.
- Ages 13 and up: most teens fit adult belts. The Champro Brute holds up to a full season of sliding.
Baseball belt buckle styles
Most baseball belts use a simple metal frame buckle with a prong through a leather or reinforced tab, which is the classic look. Some youth belts use a slide buckle that adjusts to any length without holes, which is easier for small kids and growing waists. Avoid oversized decorative buckles. They can dig into the stomach when sliding and may not meet uniform rules.
Custom and personalized baseball belts
Some teams order belts with embroidered names or numbers. They look great but cost more and take weeks to arrive. For most youth teams, a plain belt in the team color plus a name written on the inside tab is the practical choice. If you do order custom belts, order early in the season and include a few spares.
How to clean a baseball belt
- Remove the belt before washing the pants, because metal buckles can damage the washer and the fabric.
- Hand wash elastic and nylon belts in cool soapy water and air-dry them.
- Wipe leather tabs with a damp cloth.
- Don’t put belts in the dryer, which weakens the elastic.
Ordering belts for a team
- Choose one belt model and color for the whole team.
- Use youth sizes for younger players and adult sizes for coaches and older players.
- Order a few spares. Belts are the most forgotten piece of uniform on game day.
- Write player numbers on the inside tab with a marker.
