Socks to match

For knee-high socks in any team color, our top pick is the TCK Prosport: 28 colors, youth to adult sizes and 19,000+ ratings. For striped socks, stirrups and a full sock size chart, see our best baseball socks guide.

Baseball pants with piping

“Piping” is a thin contrast stripe down the outside of the leg, for example white pants with black piping. It’s a popular way to match pants to team colors without custom uniforms. Many brands sell piped versions of their standard pants, and Alleson’s braided pants come in about 20 pant and stripe combos. See the color chart in our Alleson review.

Pull-up vs belted youth pants

Pull-up (pull-on) pants have an elastic waist and often a drawstring. They’re easy for young kids and forgiving when kids are between sizes. Belted pants have a zip fly and belt loops for a more fitted, pro look, and most players switch to them by about 9 or 10. Many pull-up pants still have belt loops, so kids can wear a team belt.

How to wear youth baseball pants high

  1. Pull knee-high socks all the way up first.
  2. Put on full-length elastic-bottom pants.
  3. Pull the elastic cuff up to just below the knee, over the top of the sock.
  4. Fold any extra fabric evenly so the pants don’t sag during play.

Open-bottom pants can’t be worn high, because there’s no elastic to hold them. Choose elastic-bottom or knicker styles for this look.

Why reinforced knees matter

The knees are the first place youth pants wear through, from sliding and kneeling in the field. Pants with a double-knee or reinforced panel last noticeably longer. If your child slides a lot, look for reinforced knees and add sliding shorts underneath for extra protection.

Youth softball pants for girls

Fastpitch players usually wear fitted softball pants instead of relaxed baseball pants. They’re cut for girls’ and women’s builds and sized differently. See our Alleson review, which covers girls’ and women’s fastpitch pants and how they should fit.

Buying pants for a growing child

Kids often grow a size during a season. Buy the size that fits the waist now, and use pull-on or elastic-bottom pants that tolerate an extra inch or two of length. Avoid buying a full size up “to grow into” with open-bottom pants, which will drag in the dirt and wear out at the hem.

How to choose youth baseball pants

  • Check team rules for color and style first.
  • Fit at the waist: pull-on for young kids, belted for older players.
  • Reinforced knees last longer for kids who slide a lot.
  • Color: grey hides stains best. White looks sharp but needs pre-treating.
  • Buy two pairs for travel teams and doubleheaders.

How to get grass and clay stains out of baseball pants

  1. Rinse with cold water right after the game. Hot water sets stains.
  2. Brush off dried clay with a soft brush.
  3. Pre-treat stains with a stain remover or a paste of oxygen bleach and water, and let it sit for 30 minutes or more.
  4. Soak heavily stained white pants overnight in cold water with oxygen bleach.
  5. Wash cold, and air-dry. Check that the stain is gone before using the dryer.

Don’t forget the belt, and complete the uniform with a glove from our youth gloves guide.
