What kettlebell weight should I start with?

ExperienceStart with (about)
New to lifting8 to 12 kg (18 to 26 lb)
Some experience12 to 16 kg (26 to 35 lb)
Strong lifters16 to 24 kg (35 to 53 lb)

Swings and squats use your strongest muscles, so they need a heavier bell than presses. If you can only buy one, choose a weight you can swing for 15 reps with good form. Many people end up with two: a lighter bell for presses and a heavier one for swings.

How to do a kettlebell swing

  1. Stand with feet a little wider than hips, the bell a foot in front of you.
  2. Hinge at the hips, keep a flat back and grab the handle with both hands.
  3. Hike the bell back between your legs like a football snap.
  4. Drive your hips forward hard to swing the bell to chest height. Arms stay relaxed.
  5. Let it fall back between your legs and repeat. The power comes from the hips, not the arms or back.

A simple full-body kettlebell workout

Do 3 to 4 rounds, resting a minute between rounds:

  • 15 swings
  • 10 goblet squats
  • 8 rows per arm
  • 8 presses per arm
  • 10 reverse lunges per leg, holding the bell at your chest

Cast iron, vinyl or adjustable?

Cast iron is compact, durable and cheapest per bell. Vinyl-coated bells protect floors and are quieter. Adjustable bells save space and money if you want many weights, but are bulkier and should not be dropped. Competition kettlebells, all the same size at every weight, are for kettlebell sport and advanced lifters.

Kettlebell vs dumbbell

Dumbbells are better for classic strength exercises like bench presses, curls and lateral raises, because the weight sits evenly in your hand. Kettlebells shine in swinging and flowing movements like swings, cleans, snatches and Turkish get-ups, because the handle sits above the weight. For a home gym, a kettlebell is the best single tool for conditioning, and adjustable dumbbells are best for strength. Many people own both.

Kettlebell exercises for beginners

  • Deadlift: the foundation of the swing. Hinge and stand up holding the bell.
  • Goblet squat: hold the bell at your chest and squat between your knees.
  • Halo: circle the bell around your head to loosen the shoulders.
  • Single-arm row: support yourself on a bench or chair and row to your hip.
  • Farmer carry: walk tall holding the bell at your side to build grip and core.

Kettlebell ab and core workout

Kettlebells train the core in almost every move, but you can add a short finisher: 3 rounds of 10 Russian twists, 20 seconds of a plank with a bell pull-through and 8 dead bugs per side holding a light bell overhead. Keep the lower back flat on the floor throughout.

How to store and care for kettlebells

Keep kettlebells on a rubber mat or a low shelf, away from damp garage floors that can cause rust. Wipe sweat off handles after workouts, and touch up rough patches on the handle with fine sandpaper so they do not tear your hands.

How to progress with kettlebells

When you can do 15 to 20 smooth swings or 12 clean goblet squats, it is time for a heavier bell or harder variations. Most people move up in steps of 4 kg, for example from 12 kg to 16 kg.

Kettlebell safety tips

  • Learn the hip hinge before swinging.
  • Train in a clear space, with nothing behind or in front of you.
  • Keep your back flat and do not lift with your arms in swings.
  • Put the bell down if your grip or form starts to fail.
  • Check the handle for rough spots that could tear skin.
