How to choose a weight bench
Flat or adjustable
A flat bench is simpler and more stable. An adjustable bench adds incline and decline angles, which work the chest and shoulders differently and unlock more exercises. For dumbbell home gyms, adjustable is the better choice.
Weight capacity
Capacity includes your body weight plus the weights you lift. ASTM certification means the bench has been tested to a standard, which is reassuring at budget prices.
Stability
Wide feet, a heavy steel frame and a small gap between the seat and backrest make a bench feel solid. This matters most for heavy presses.
Folding and storage
Folding benches save space, which is why most home benches fold. Check the folded size for your space.

Simple dumbbell and bench workout
- Incline dumbbell press: 3 sets of 8 to 12.
- Chest-supported row: lie face down on an incline, 3 sets of 10.
- Bulgarian split squat: back foot on the bench, 3 sets of 8 per leg.
- Seated shoulder press: backrest upright, 3 sets of 10.
- Decline sit-up: using the leg holder, 3 sets of 12.
Weight bench with leg extension
Some benches add a leg extension and curl attachment. On Amazon, the benches with leg attachments we checked had far fewer reviews and lower ratings than the plain adjustable benches above. For most home lifters, a solid adjustable bench plus dumbbells, Bulgarian split squats and Romanian deadlifts trains the legs very well. If you want leg extensions, check the reviews and capacity carefully before buying.
Do I need a bench with a rack?
If you plan to bench press with a barbell, you need a rack or stands with safety catches, and ideally a spotter. For dumbbell training, a standalone adjustable bench is all you need, and it is much safer to train alone.
Weight bench with bar and weights sets
All-in-one bench sets with a barbell and plates look like good value, but many are lighter duty than a standalone bench and offer limited weight. For most people, a quality adjustable bench plus a pair of adjustable dumbbells is safer to use alone, takes less space and grows with you. If you want a barbell, buy a proper rack with safety catches separately.
Bench exercises without weights
A bench is useful even before you buy dumbbells: incline push-ups, step-ups, Bulgarian split squats, triceps dips, hip thrusts and decline sit-ups all use only body weight. It is a good way to start training while you build up your home gym.
Best weight bench for tall or heavy lifters
Look for a long backrest, a wide pad and a high certified capacity. The FLYBIRD WB5 and YOLEO both have ASTM certification around 800 lb. Check the maximum user weight as well as the total capacity, and make sure the seat and backrest leave no big gap under your lower back.
How to look after a weight bench
Wipe the pads after every workout with a damp cloth and mild soap, because sweat breaks down vinyl over time. Check bolts and pins every month and tighten anything loose. Store folding benches upright and out of direct sun.
Weight bench safety tips
- Check that all pins are fully locked before every set.
- Keep the bench on a flat floor or a rubber mat.
- Do not exceed the stated weight capacity.
- Choose weights you can control, especially when training alone.
Pair your bench with adjustable dumbbells, a kettlebell and a pull-up bar for a complete home gym.
